Universal Masking Masking Information (from Hospital Visitor Access policy). Universal masking requires everyone entering AAH facilities to wear an AAH approved mask (procedure mask or cloth mask) while in our facility, unless unable to safely do so. patients unable to safely wear a mask are permitted to enter, documentation or evidence of exception is not required. Visitors unable to mask will not be able to have in-person visitation and will be asked to utilize our virtual visits as a safe alternative. Universal masking across all AAH facilities is in accordance with CDC recommendations, IP/ID guidelines and aligns with our commitment to safety and our Safe Care Promise.

7 Exceptions for patients will be made when the risk outweighs benefits and patient would experience harm if required to wear a mask, examples include: a. Health or behavioral health concerns such as but not limited to: 1. Sensory disorders 2. Communication barriers 3. Autism spectrum disorder 4. Anxiety disorders 5. CDC recommends that Cloth face coverings should not be placed on young children under age 2, anyone who has trouble breathing, or anyone who is unconscious, incapacitated or otherwise unable to remove the mask without assistance. b. Screening station team members will document status as unable to mask to inform the receiving department of the status for accommodations within the department in accordance with IP/ID guidelines.

8 Offer identifier options, sticker and face shield as options for patients (see page 8 for process details). c. 9 In such instances, the patient/visitor will be provided a procedure mask to replace or apply over their personal valve respirator and/or under their face shield. If patient refusal occurs, the screening station will contact receiving department to inform them. a. Receiving department will cancel appointment and determine next steps for patient including notification of physician as appropriate for additional clinical follow-up. What Does the Identifier Process Include? Sticker offered to patients who are unable to mask that they wear during their stay with us.

10 Face shields offered as an option to a mask. Why Create an Identifier for Those Who Cannot Mask? patients who are unable to wear a mask due to approved reasons are being stopped several times during their stay on site and being asked to put on a mask. This is a dissatisfier and is causing anxiety for patient's while onsite. A visible cue to team members and other patients /visitors would help avoid situations where the unmasked patient is continuously asked to wear a mask. A cue will also help other patients /visitors understand why this patient was exempted from the mask protocol versus thinking we did not adequately enforce our masking guidelines. How Does the Identifier Process Work? When a patient states they are unable to mask due to health or behavioral concerns, please offer them the option of wearing the sticker and offer a face shield as an alternative.
