My name is Jennifer Maker , and today, I am teaching you how to use Design Space on desktop. This is the Cricut KICKOFF Lesson Three where I teach you the primary functions of Design Space. So you feel comfortable in the software and can create something awesome.
Now in Lesson One of Cricut KICKOFF , we downloaded and installed the free Cricut design app from , create a Cricut ID or sign in with the one that we had and did our test cut. Today, we will dive into Design Space itself and see how it all works. Now, before we get too far, I want to remind you about my free Cricut KICKOFF Principle Handbook that goes along with these lessons. You can download it right now at Just register for the class which is free and you get the handbook. I ll be referring to it as we go online during today s lesson. So please pull up a chair in my craft room, bring your Cricut if you have it, we can do this side by side and let s get started. So Cricut Design Space is the free companion app to your Cricut cutting machine, Design Space or DS as some people will call it, lets you design and cut with your Cricut .
You can create projects from scratch. You can use one of Cricuts images or you can upload images. And again, this is free software. So even if you don t currently have a Cricut , you can download the software free and play around with it. First that works on the Cricut Joy, Explore and Maker . Current system requirements for Cricut Design Space are for Windows to have Windows eight or later, at least four gigabytes of RAM or more and at least two gigabytes of free disc space and the Mac, you need to be running always or later and have the same four gigabytes of RAM and two gigabytes of disc space. If you find that your Cricut Design Space seems really slow the culprit is very likely or your computer CPU memory or available hard drive space.
Cricut Design Space is very fast for me and I have virtually no problems with it ever. All right. So the issues mostly with slowness at least will have to do with not the app, but for your computer, here we go. Okay. So this is what it looks like when we first opened up Design Space, whether it s on our Mac or Windows, whether desktop or laptop, it always looks the same. Now of course the graphics across the top change because those rotate in and out. And these, my section here that says my projects, those will change. They ll be your projects. When you first get here, this is just, this is the home screen and we need to actually get into the Canvas so we can see all of the cool tools and abilities. So we re going to click right here on New project.
See this new project here. And we re going to go to our Canvas, which looks like this. This is our Canvas. This is where we will design for Design Space. So there s a lot going on here. I want to go through the basic things. I do want to note that it s not possible for me to go through every possible function in Design Space. It is a deceptively simple program that actually has more depth to it than you might think. All right, so here s our window. And again, this grid area is our Canvas, starting up here with these three line menu, which I call the hamburger menu. This is your account information. So if we click on that, here s our profile. That s not particularly important. This is when we ever want to go back to the home screen.
That first screen Copyright JenniferMaker | Page 4 | visit Cricut KICKOFF TRANSCRIPT that you saw. And right now we are on the Canvas. Now down here, we have a lot of more options. New machines set up is if you want to do less than one again, that s where you would do it. It leads you through your test cut and everything. Again, calibration is, if you re noticing that your cuts aren t right, you can calibrate your machine. I do not have to do it hardly at all. So it s not something that is required. You just do it if you re having an issue. Custom materials is for material settings, a little bit more advanced but that s where you access it. This is updating your software settings is perhaps more useful.
Let me just show you that. So if you click on Settings right here, you get your option to change your language. So if you speak a different language and you would like to see the menu items in that language you would change it there. You can change your grid to be the full grid, a partial grid or no grid. So if you just want a white background you can do that here. You can change your units from imperial to metric. If you want to save for offline so you can save to your cloud and computer or just cloud only, and then your Canvas style. So if this is only, may only be here for a while, but if you want to change this, so there s been an update recently if you want to change to the older version, you can, but I have had no reason to do that.
All right? So then along the left side here are our main icons, our main functions. So clicking the circle with the plus will give us a new Canvas. We re already on a new one. So we don t need to do that right now. Templates is a feature that s only available on desktop and clicking on it lets you choose a template to help you design something. How about a canister? Let s see, there we go. It puts onto your Canvas for you and you can even resize it to be a different size. If you want you click right here and you can change it up here. This is, this template is only shows up on your Canvas for designing. So it could be useful if you like it. If not, and you can hide and show it with a little icon right here.
The next one is projects. So Cricut has some ready to make projects, has really quite a few. And there are in here. If you want to just browse, learn how to do something. This is a popular one right now. I ve seen a lot of people in my group making this. It s a tool organizer for your Cricut organizer tray. Images we re going to talk about a little later, but this is how, but there s over a hundred thousand images in Cricut and this is how you Access them. And we will do that in a bit, same for texts. We ll talk about texts in a little bit. And shapes, this brings up a menu of available shapes that you can use to design things with, and then applaud we re going to do as well. So I ll just leave those until we get to there.
