2 Is an air-hardening medium alloy tool steelwhich is heat treatable to HRC 60-62. It has wear resistanceintermediate between the oil hardening tool steels (O1) andthe high carbon chromium tool steels (D2). Because it offersa combination of good toughness along with moderatewear resistance, ithas been widely used for many years invariety of cold work applications which require fairly highabrasion resistance but where the higher carbon/ highchromium steels are prone to chipping and is quite easily machined in the annealedconditionand, like other air-hardening tool steels, exhibits minimaldistortion on hardening, making it an excellent choice fordies of complicated design.
