Initially developed for commercial Salmon fishing, thesetechniques are equally effective with numerous other gamefish species including: Albacore, Bass, Mackinaw, Trout,Halibut, Walleye and Pike. Rigging Techniques and tricks provide the vital differencebetween catching no fish and achieving your limit is it that a few fishermen always seem to catch more fish?Luck? Successful fishing has very little to do with luck. Whatgives you the edge is knowing the tricksof successful the Flasher to the Downrigger WeightSome fishermen prefer to avoid the drag of a flasher oncethey catch a salmon.

One method of doing this is to tie theflasher on a separate leader attached to the downriggercannonball. Baits or Lures can then be stacked higher up onthe downrigger wire. I like to leave about ten feet between myflasher and a stacked bait to ensure that they do not tangle asthe flasher on Apex UseTip #1: A little-known fact is that the Apex can be used inmotor mooching. The trick is to use light leader and hooksize as small as possible. Successful fishermen use 10-12 with a 3/0 hook and a #5 swivel on the four largest-sizedApex. Again, set your speed by observing the action of theApex beside the boat. Using this method, the Apex willsometimes out-fish #2: At times dressing your Apex with bait can be theextra stimulus that makes fish strike. For years New Yorkfishermen have dressed their Apex Lures with a wormthreaded on the hook.

When trolled behind a planer on LakeErie this rig has come to be called a Dunkirk Special ,after the New York city where this method was first used. Besure to check the action of your Apex in the water to ensureyou haven t overwhelmed the lure action by using too large aworm or bait. If you find the action impaired, decrease thebait size until normal Apex action is restored. The addition ofbait can slow the action down similar to using a larger previous section on checking lure #3: Rinsing your Apex, flashers, rods & reels in freshwater will extend their flasher is tied separately behind the downrigger weightto act as an attractor. Fishing LineRelease15 - 25 Downrigger CableLure is run above andbehind the flasherThe leader tests and hook sizes that come with each Apexare:Since monofilament fishing line has a limited life span whichvaries according to exposure to ultraviolet rays, werecommend that leaders be changed on a regular basis.

Aswell, after catching a fish, make it a habit to change yourleader, as any nicks or cuts may be hard to Leader (A1)15 long2/0#7 (A2)1548 2/0# (A3)2048 3/0# (A4)2572 4/0# (A5)20 or 2572 4/0# (A6)2572 4/0# (A7)2572 4/0#5 Size SelectionThe selection of the correct Apex size is based on the size ofthe bait fish attacked by your target fish. The Apex sizenumbers correspond to bait fish inches. For example, troutfeeding on small minnows would go after a (A2) or (A3) size Apex. Salmon feeding on medium anchoviesor small herring would go after a (A5) Apex. Lake Trout(Mackinaw) feeding on Kokanee Trout would go after (A7) SpeedThe Apex maintains its vibrating action at a wide range ofspeeds; it has a strong shaking and rolling action even atspeeds as slow as knots.

At the other extreme, the Apexcan be very successful at speeds as high as four or five models are designed to work best within certainspeed SizeRecommendedAverage Speed (Knots) (A1) to (A2) to (A3) to *(A4) to (A5) to *(A6) to (A7) to * The and sizes are wider; therefore, they allowslower Trolling speeds for equal lure the Lure ActionWhenever you put an Apex in the water, check for twoimportant things: the knot tied to the swivel must be straight, and the swivel and the hook must hang straight back. If thehook hangs to the side, the lure will not be balanced and willnot have the right action. First, try the lure beside the boat. The action is fast so watchclosely. There should be a clockwise then acounterclockwise motion. Varying the boat speed slightlywill help get the ideal action.

If the action is too radical, trya larger hook size and swivel When you are seekingCutthroat or other Trout, slow Trolling speeds are often thebest way to attract bites. Lighter leaders will work best in thiscircumstance. A 6 lb. to 10 lb. test is recommended. Anexception is fishing for Kamloops Rainbow or Steelhead, when a faster speed of to usually works the Hot Spot ReallyWorksOver 100 years ago fishermen discovered that their catchcould be improved significantly by using a flashing ordodging attractor trolled ahead of their fishing lure. Gamefish were attracted to the system and would then respond tobait or lure trailed behind the flasher. Most early flasherswere made of formed Hot Spot Flasher was developed in the 1950s with theadvent of highly stable plastics.

It immediately offeredadvantages never before achievable with other flasherdesigns. The key advantage was the shape of the flasher, which provided the optimum rolling and kicking action inthe water. With new moulding technologies and new plastics, this exact shape can be maintained and duplicated over andover , every commercial troller in the world knows the HotSpot Flasher. Skilled and successful fishermen alsoconsistently use the Deadly Hot Spot system. Its carefullyengineered shape and rigid quality control ensure thatfishermen can achieve consistent, quality great deal of research has been done on why predatory fishare attracted to a flasher or dodger. The research work provesthat the powerful vibrations emitted by the erratic movementof the flasher attract fish from up to 40 or 50 yards away.

Inmost cases the fish never see the flasher until they are withina few feet of it. Research concludes that the darting flasheraction exactly duplicates the vibrations made by predators asthey attack bait fish, and that feeding fish are attracted to thismotion in the water. The result is a congregation of hungryfish at the flasher, which are led to believe that other fish Hot Spot RiggingThe Hot Spot Flasher will perform well in a variety of key decisions a fisherman needs to make are: 1) Theleader length between the downrigger release and theflasher. 2) The tail length between the flasher and thehoochie or bait behind the flasher. 3) The weight of theleader to use. 4) Which bait, lure or hoochie to use behindthe typical Chinook Salmon setup is 18 ft. of 30 lb. leaderbetween the 11 original Hot Spot and the downriggerrelease, and 42 of 30 lb.

Tail leader to the diagram shows the most common setup for ChinookSalmon. The distance between the downrigger release andthe flasher is 18 ft. (three fathoms), and the tail distance is42 this is the same setup measurements most often usedby commercial Salmon trollers. A hoochie trolled behind theflasher is the most popular system. A leader weight of 30 an optimal weight for a sports fishing setup. When fishing at shallow depths (less than 40 ft.) for Troutand Salmon (large Chinooks), a longer leader (30-70 ft.)from release to flasher is ideal leader or tail length behind the flasher varies bythe type of fish desired and by the lure used behind theflasher. When Trolling slowly and fishing for smaller Salmon, use the shorter dimensions. When Trolling quickly and forlarger Salmon, use the longer PikeNote: Try glow-in-the-dark when fishing in deep or dark iinn cclleeaarr//bblluuee wwaatteerr.
