Nyt fra Den Danske Kirke i Brisbane april 2018 Palm Sunday Church service and konfirmation It was a typically humid day with clouds in Brisbane and 30 degrees C, but the rain held off and the sun was shining in between. Pastor Bente and the konfirmander came early to prepare before the church service, and Bente s two assistants Astrid and Ditte were also in Brisbane. It was good to have their help setting up table and chairs etc., as our committee member Pia, her husband Carlo and their children were in Denmark on holiday. The 25th March was Palm Sunday, in itself a festive occasion, but made even better as we had two young people being confirmed, Hayley Pedersen in a beautiful white dress, and Alexander Baun Hegner in a very smart suit, they both looked so grown up. Our pastor Bente had coached them and they read the entry and exit prayers. Maya Hosking, who will be confirmed in Denmark later, also took part. The konfirmands parents, relatives and friends were in church to celebrate them, so with our usual congregation we were 38 people in church.
After the service congratulations were given and photos taken, and then it was time to have coffee/tea and warm wienerbroed, that Hayley s father John Pedersen had brought, and aeblekage, that Merete had made in the meeting room under the church. Everyone was chatting and having a good time. Thank you to our helpers in the church, the meeting room and the kitchen. James and Maya who did the collection and took off the tablecloths and collected the Danish flags. Asbjoen, Melinda, Kurt, Pat and Mette that helped in the church and kitchen, and a couple of male guests helped put back tables and chairs. We also thank Lis and Joergen Skov for providing accommodation for Pastor Bente, when she is in Brisbane. COMING CHURCH SERVICES The dates for the next Danish Church services in Brisbane are: SATURDAY 15 SEPTEMBER 2018 AT 10 AM SATURDAY 15 December 2018 AT 10 AM The Christmas Bazaar will be on Saturday 17 November 2018 from 8 am to 12 noon.
All are held at St. Mark s Lutheran Church, 71 Newnham Road, Mt. Gravatt Kind regards Pia, Asbjoern and Mer SKT HANS IS ON AGAIN! Then we will move on to a rousing rendition of Vi elsker vort land by the side of the bonfire .. and yes, let s do both versions again this year! So come and join us at our Viking village. Don t forget to bring along a torch, a comfy chair and warm clothes. And if you have some Viking garb, then bring that along too! # Head for the YMCA camp in Byrnes Road, drive to the end of the road and it s on the right side You re welcome to camp on our site overnight Things that happen when you live with a Scandinavian (part 1) Maybe you ve already moved in and you re Googling strange things that happen when you live with a Scandinavian don t worry, you ve come to the right place for answers.
Or maybe you re thinking Should I start sharing my home with Agneta or Henrik? Here, we give you a heads up what things might be like in your home, if you choose to go ahead. You ve been warned. They make you leave your shoes in the hallway. Everything off in the hallway and on with a nice pair of slippers. It s a hygiene thing (although in Denmark you can sometimes get away with it). In Sweden, they ll make you ask your guests to take their shoes off, too. This is how it will be from now on. Announce when it is pee-pee time I think I ll go for a pee now will become a staple sentence. Eventually, you ll start to adopt this habit too and find yourself doing it during a meeting at your fancy non-Scandinavian office. The heating is maxed Despite what people think, Scandinavians hate to be cold. Your house will now be a comfortable 23-24 degrees all year around. Any less and there will be complaints. Also, you will air the room before bed.
Yes, open bedroom windows, even at minus 20c. Re-decorating & furniture Living with a Scandi, decorating is easy: There is only one colour to choose from (white). This colour is also applied to skirting, radiators, ceilings and floorboards. Also you probably won t need curtains any more (at least if you live with a Dane). If you don t have a sofa table, one will appear within a week of the move because not having a sofa table in unheard of (where will we put our coffee?!) Also, you no longer need carpets: Start your goodbyes now. No more knick-knacks One by one, those little cute things you own will be replaced by stylish candle holders and sleek things. No more souvenirs from Tenerife, no more ornate fireplace clocks. Eventually, you ll find them all in a box in the attic. Good bye. Is it a cult? They burn day and evenings, sometimes entire packets of tealight in one room. Don t fear, this is not a cult; it s just cosy. Also, you may find that 4-5 small lamps are added to each room.
Because, hygge. Your double duvet is replaced by two single ones. This is not a declaration that the love is dead, merely that nobody will steal your duvet again and you will keep your cold feet to yourself. And wait for an invite. THIS is true love.
