LeathamThe Department of Agricultural Economics engages people in the use ofeconomic analysis for making decisions involving agribusiness (includingfood and fiber production, supplying inputs, processing products andmarketing), natural resources and communities. Students are taught todevelop their leadership, analytical and communication skills. Disciplinaryresearch and graduate education enhance the use of economic principlesand research methods in solving economic problems facing research programs emphasize the analysis of business andpublic policy planning a student s program, the need for broad training, ratherthan narrow specialization, is recognized. Students (regardless oftheir primary interests) are encouraged to take not only advancedcourses covering various fields within the Department but also essentialsupporting courses in other departments.

2 Students are expected toacquire a knowledge of economic theory, its application to contemporaryagricultural production, agribusiness and resource problems, and theability to employ analytical techniques in making policy and teaching and research activities are grouped broadly as follows:agribusiness management and finance, production Economics , marketsand trade, policy analysis, and resource Economics . The present andexpanding program of research in the Department affords the student awide choice and capable guidance in thesis or dissertation of Science (MS) and Master of Agribusiness (MAB) degreesare offered. MS students ( ) may choose between the thesis option (recommendedfor those students who plan to go on for further graduate studies) andthe non-thesis option. Students who choose the MS non-thesis optiontake a greater number of courses. The Master of Agribusiness degree( ) program is non-thesis, interdisciplinary andjointly administered by the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences andthe Mays Business School.

3 This professional curriculum is designedto provide a broad preparation for economic , financial and marketinganalysis of agribusiness, food and fiber industry PhD program ( )concentrates on the theory, quantitative tools and methodology requiredof the professional applied economist. Field areas offered within the PhDprogram include: Markets and Information Economics , Resource andEnvironmental Economics and Policy and Trade. A PhD in Agribusinessand Managerial Economics ( ) is also offered by the Intercollegiate Faculty ofAgribusiness. No foreign language is required for students pursuing anyof our PhD programs.
