Diabetes Empowerment Education Program is a licensed Diabetes self-management Education (DSME) curriculum developed by the University of Illinois, Chicago. deep was developed to provide communities with tools to better manage Diabetes and is based on principles of Empowerment and adult Education . The purpose of this training is to train staff on providing Diabetes Education to members of their community. There are several types of deep training. 1. Master Trainer-Person has to receive the deep Training from the University of Illinois staff. After completing this three day training, each trainee will receive a certificate. These trainees will be able to offer deep Training to other trainers. (3 days) Train the Trainer-Training offered by deep Master Trainers.

2 People that complete the training will receive a certificate. These trainees will be able to conduct Diabetes Education in their community for people with Diabetes . (3 days) Training People with Diabetes -All trainees will be able to conduct Diabetes Education classes to people in their community. Training stresses the development of skills and knowledge related to Diabetes by using interactive group activities and adult Education methods. deep is designed as an 8-10 week curriculum for DSME and divided into eight modules covering topics that include Diabetes risk factors, complications, nutrition, physical activity, use of the glucose meter and medications, building partnerships with a Diabetes health care team, psychosocial effects of illness, problem-solving strategies, and how to access community Diabetes resources. The curriculum is based on national Diabetes care and Diabetes self-management Education guidelines and recommendations.( 2 hour weekly classes for 8 weeks) Who should attend a deep Train the Trainer Training?

3 Staff who work with people who have Diabetes and conduct or plan to conduct Diabetes self-management Education classes. Who will be conducting the training? The training will be conducted by deep Master Trainers from the Health Promotion and Chronic Disease Prevention Section of DSHS.
