1 Directory of National Origin Names & Alphanumeric Codes CDE, Language Policy and Leadership Office Immigrant Education Program Telephone (916) 319-0845 1 Directory of National Origin Names & Country Codes (Revised May 2004) This Directory is to be used as a reference by Local Educational Agencies (LEAs) and private schools when conducting counts of eligible immigrant students as required by Title III of the No Child Left Behind Act and reporting these data to the California Department of Education (CDE) via the Student National Origin Report (SNOR). Specific instructions regarding the identification and reporting of eligible immigrant students are contained on page 7 of this Directory .

2 The Names for the countries listed in this Directory are taken from an official list maintained by the United Nations The Names of countries are organized in alphabetical order according to the English language Names . In cases where a Country may be referred to by more than one name , the various Names are included in the Directory but the code is provided only for the version of the name that should be used for the compilation of SNOR data. The two-letter Country Codes are taken from the Data Dictionary of the California Student Information System (CSIS). Students from areas categorized as trust territories are not eligible for participation in the Title III, Immigrant Education Program since persons from these areas are granted citizenship at birth.

3 Following is a detailed list of ineligible (trust) territories. Ineligible Trust Territories District of Columbia Guam Mariana Islands, Includes Saipan and Wake Islands. Marshall Includes Jaluit, Kwajalein, and Majuro Islands. Micronesian Island Trusts .. Includes Baker, Howland, Jarvis, Midway, Navassa, Wake Islands, Johnston and Palmyra Atolls, and Kingman Reef. Includes Western Caroline Islands. Puerto Rico Samoa, American .. Includes Tutuila and Swain's Island. Virgin Islands, .. Includes St. Croix, St. John, and St. Thomas Islands. Also not meeting the criteria for the legal definition of eligible immigrant students under Title III are children born overseas to diplomatic and military personnel, and to some other citizens, whenever the children are granted citizenship at the time of birth.
