Distance Education Programmes in TN Universities

1 TAMIL NADU STATE COUNCIL FOR HIGHER Education Distance Education Programmes offered by Tamil Nadu State Universities December 2004 Distance Education Programmes offered by Tamil Nadu State Universities The need for offering of Programmes by the Universities through means other than the regular courses in colleges and departments of the university in order to augment opportunities for higher Education was realised soon after we attained independence. Initially evening Programmes , certificates courses during weekly holidays etc., were introduced. Later the idea of correspondence course came up. Madurai Kamaraj university started correspondence courses as early as 1971. Soon Annamalai and Madras Universities followed by establishing directorates of correspondence courses.

2 Due to expansion in the higher Education system, the Tamil Nadu Government established a number of affiliating Universities from 1982 onwards by splitting the jurisdictions of Madras and Madurai Kamaraj Universities . During the course of years every one of these also established directorates of correspondence course. These directorates slowly evolved into the present Distance Education directorates offering Programmes not only to those who have qualified to pursue university Education but also to those who have not undergone formal higher secondary Education . Information has been collected on the courses of studies offered by the Tamil Nadu State Universities under the regular scheme and presented in the form of tables as follows: Table 1. Annamalai university offers Double Degree Programmes through which a graduate can take a second degree in one year. Graduates of Arts, Science and Commerce can get a Second degree in English Science - BBA - through this programme. Graduates in , Mathematics can get a second degree in Statistics Operations research Computer Science Information Technology Visual Communication through this programme.

Mother Teresa university offers Double degree courses through which a woman graduate can take a second degree in one year. graduates in any subject can get a second degree in Catering Hotel Management Garment design and Fashion Technology Visual Communication information Technology under this programme. 3.
