Key to this issue is encouraging alumni to give back to the university. How does Cornell s unique status as both an elite Ivy and a land-grant institution position it to do good in the world? 1 Dr. Deborah J. ArrindellCornell degree: BS 79 (CALS)I think one of the most important issues facing the Cornell University Board of Trustees is ensuring that the university is in a position to attract the best students and top faculty, in order to support the university s mission statement of learning, discovery, and engagement. Key to this issue is encouraging alumni to give back to the university. How does Cornell s unique status as both an elite Ivy and a land-grant institution position it to do good in the world? How can the trustees and alumni support Cornell s mission to do the greatest good?Whether you are an undergraduate student, graduate student, or faculty member, Cornell s Ivy League status and land-grant institution status combine the best of both worlds. The dual status allows Cornell to attract the best and the brightest, which in turn leads to Cornell s ability to problem solve on a local and global level.

2 It is very clear that the world s problems don t necessarily know physical boundaries, but rather impact all of us. In order to solve those global problems, there is a need for well-trained problem solvers who can provide solutions from a variety of disciplines or perspectives. Cornell s ability to offer students and faculty unique opportunities to study and do research across multiple colleges/disciplines positions Cornell to do the greatest good for the global community. Trustees and alumni need to continue to support Cornell s mission to do the greatest good, by ensuring diverse students and faculty are a part of the global Cornell community. How do you envision the Board of Trustees supporting Cornell s founding principle of .. any person .. any study? How does this relate to Cornell s priority to strengthen and broaden diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives across the university?

3 The Board of Trustees must continue to embrace the principle upon which Cornell was founded by working to ensure that significant barriers are not erected that would deter students from attending Cornell, including financial, cultural, or other barriers. The Board of Trustees must work across the university, especially with diverse groups at Cornell, to understand the dynamics behind these barriers and how they can be eliminated. Diversity, equity, and inclusion policies need to be an integral part of the Board of Trustees short-term and long-term strategic goals, including adequate financial support to carry out those initiatives that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion at Cornell. In the end, the board sets the tone and leads by example. Why do you hope to serve on the board and how are you uniquely suited to contribute to Cornell s success?

4 I am the oldest of eight children and was the first to go to college and then on to medical school. My parents instilled in me that I had to be a role model for my brothers and sisters, as well as others. Most importantly, they taught me the significance of reaching back and bringing others along. Serving on the Board of Trustees would allow me to continue to be a role model for my community at large, but more importantly, would solidify my commitment to helping others obtain a Cornell education. My Cornell education has allowed me to obtain a unique skill set that covers two disciplines, law and medicine, as well as the opportunity to work in a global environment in the biopharmaceutical industry. One of my key strengths is understanding that Cornell s global success is dependent on critical thinking, innovation, and tapping into diverse teams across multiple disciplines ( , medicine, law, technology, business).
