1 Early Childhood Commission Term Two Parent Support Activity Plans Week One, Day one Age: 4 Year Olds Theme: Plants Sub theme: What are plants? Circle Time Name of Activity : Fun in the Sun with Plants Objectives: At the end of the Activity , child/children should be able to: 1. Identify two uses of plants 2. Make the /s/ sound 3. Observe plants in the environment 4. Create a prayer thanking God for plants Concept/Content: God made all plants. Plants grow all over the world. Plants are used to beautify the environment and also to grow food for us to eat. The letter s makes the /s/ sound. Some plant words are sorrel, soursop, seeds, sunlight. Skills: Discussing, observing, speaking, listening Resources: Pictures of plants, smartphone Activity Steps: 1. Take child/children on a nature walk to observe different plants in the environment. 2. Discuss with child/children who made the plants and the different uses of plants.
2 3. Let child/children look around for plants that are used for foods and plants that beautify the environment. 4. Show child /children the picture below. Engage them in a discussion about the plant in the picture. Talk about what time of year this plant is often seen/used. sorrel 5. Say the word sorrel and ask child/children to make the sound heard at the beginning of the word. 6. Have child/children tell which letter they think makes the /s/ sound. 7. Let child/children repeat the /s/ sound. Praise them for their efforts. 8. Help child/children to create a short prayer thanking God for the plants around us. Guided Learning Name of Activity - Identifying Plants Beginning with the /s/ Sound Objectives: At the end of the Activity , child/children should be able to: 1. Identify their favourite plant 2. Name plant related items which begin with the /s/ sound 3. Tell the letter sound heard at the beginning of words with the initial /s/ sound 4.
3 Complete simple addition problems Skills: Locating, discussing Resources: Pictures of plant related items, variety of seeds Activity Steps: 1. Show child/children the pictures below. sorrel soursop seeds sunlight 2. Allow child/children to touch each picture and name the item seen. 3. Let child/children tell the letter sound heard at the beginning of each word. 4. Invite child/children to talk about their favourite plants. 5. Review addition with child/children, using sets of seeds. 6. Provide child/children with seeds and worksheet (see appendix) and allow them to use seeds to complete addition questions. Creative Activity Name of Activity : Plant Paint Objectives: At the end of the Activity , child/children should be able to: 1. Follow instructions 2. Name at least three colours of paint 3. Mix two colours of paint to make new colours 4.
4 Grasp a paint brush Skills: Manipulating, observing Resources: paper, paint, paint brushes, cup of water, leaves Activity Steps 1. Provide water paints, a sheet of paper and at least three different kinds of leaves. 2. Ask child/children to name the colours of paint seen. 3. Allow child/children to choose and mix two colours of paint together. 4. Ask child/children to name the new colour that was made, for example, red and blue paint made purple. 5. Allow child/children to mix other colours of paint. 6. Let child/children spread different colours of paint on each leaf. 7. Assist child/children to print the painted section of each leaf onto a blank paper. Praise child/children for their efforts. Put the leaf printings to dry. 8. Let child/children display their art work in the home. Outdoor/Indoor Name of Activity : Move Like a Plant Objectives: At the end of the Activity , child/children should be able to: 1.
5 Follow instructions to demonstrate plant movement. 2. Demonstrate an understanding of fast and slow. 3. Develop greater balance and coordination by stretching their bodies. Resources: None Skills: Observing, manipulating, listening Activity Steps: 1. Talk with child/children about what causes a plant to move. 2. Have child/children demonstrate with their bodies how a plant moves if there is little wind (child/children will sway gently back and forth). 3. Tell child/children to move his/her body if the wind is blowing stronger (child/children will move faster from side-to-side). 4. Encourage child/children to shake themselves to show how plants move in hurricane force winds. story Time Name of Activity : jack and the beanstalk Objectives: At the end of the Activity , child/children should be able to: 1. Listen to a story for at least 5 minutes 2. Respond to questions asked 3. Identify the steps of plant growth through pictures 3. Repeat a poem Concept/Content: Plants are living things.
7 They need air, water and sunlight to grow. Skills: Listening, repeating, cutting, naming Resources: Child friendly scissors, flashcard Activity Steps: 1. Say the following poem for child/children two times. 2. Engage child/children in a discussion by asking the following questions: a) What was the poem about? b) What did they plant so the flower could grow? c) How did they go about planting the seed? d) What were some of the things the seed needed to grow? 3. Cut out the following picture/word cards. Use them as guides to show child/children the process of how plants are planted and grown. Tell child/children that all plants need air, water and sunlight to grow. Culminating Activity : Have child/children place a pea in a cup with pieces of damp torn up newspaper. Tell one plant that grows from a seed and one plant that grows from a stem Skills: Identifying, differentiating, counting, colouring Resources: 5 word cards with the words, big plant and 5 word cards with the word small plant w, camera, crayon, worksheet, pencil Activity Steps: 1. Take child/children on a nature walk around the yard to identify plants that are big and plants that are small. 2. Assist child/children to identify three big plants and two small plants. 3. Allow child/children to label the plants with the word strips provided in the worksheet. 4. Instruct child/children to count how many plants they have labelled and take pictures of each. 5. Invite child/children to guess whether the plant grew from a seed or a stem. 6. Assist child/children to complete the following worksheet. Creative Activity Name of Activity : Taking Pictures of Plants Objectives: At the end of the Activity , child/children should be able to: 1.
9 Use a paint brush correctly 2. Create a copy of plants seen on pictures 3. Explore reasons they like a plant Skills: Painting, observing, drawing, Resources: Paper/scrapbook, paint, paint brush, pencil, glue, tape Activity Steps: 1. Invite child/children to draw pictures of two of the small plants and two of the big plants identified on the nature walk in Guided Learning. 2. Ask child/children to paint the pictures and paste them in their scrapbooks. 3. Have child/children stand beside the plant they painted. Take a picture of child/children beside the painting. 4. Allow child/children to choose one plant painting and share what they like about the plant. Indoor/Outdoor Play Name of Activity : Watch Me Grow Objectives: At the end of the Activity , child/children should be able to: 1. Follow given instructions 2. Display physical fitness by jumping and bending on request 3. 10 Let child/children stand in front of a step or in front of a firmly placed building block. 2. Give a command to child/children by saying, grow my tree, grow . Child/children will respond by jumping up on the step/block. 3. Give a command to child/children by saying, shrink my tree, shrink . Child/children will respond by jumping off the step/block. 4. Give a command to child/children by saying, stay still my tree, stay still . Child/children will respond by standing still. 5. Repeat the commands at least 5 times, each time randomly choosing one of the commands from steps 2-4.
