It now appears in a fifth American popular little volume is rightly named, being a republicationof the first three Ellen G.
White books Christian Experience andViews of Mrs. E. G. White, First printed in 1851;A Supplement toExperience and Views, Issued in 1854; andSpiritual Gifts, VolumeI, which appeared in wide and lasting popularity ofEarly Writingsmay be at-tributed to the unwaning desire to possess and study the messagesof information and encouragement which came Early to the Churchthrough the prophetic second printing of this matter was made in 1882 in two smallvolumes Experience and Viewsand theSupplementcomprisingthe first, andSpiritual Giftsthe second. As to certain additions tothe first of these original works and some slight editorial changesmade at that time, the publisher s preface states: Footnotes giving dates and explanations, and an appendix giv-ing two very interesting dreams, which were mentioned but notrelated in the original work, will add to the value of this from these, no changes from the original work have beenmade in the present edition, except the occasional employment of anew word, or a change in the construction of a sentence, to better[iv]express the idea, and no portion of the work has been omitted.
Noshadow of change has been made in any idea or sentiment of theoriginal work, and the verbal changes have been made under theauthor s own eye, and with her full approval. The two companion books were also reissued as a single volumein 1882 under the titleEarly Writings . In 1906 the type was reset tovviEarly Writingsmake the third American edition, which has had wide distribution, meeting the ever-increasing demand. The paging of this editionbecame the standard for all reference work and the subsequentlypublished indexes to the Writings of Mrs. fourth edition ofEarly Writingswas published in years of printing and reprinting made necessary new printingplates. As the type was reset the content was held page for pagewith the edition it succeeded. Modern spelling and current forms ofpunctuation were employed and a new preface reviewed briefly thehistory of the fifth edition is characterized by a historical prologue, addedto furnish the reader with a knowledge of the times and circum-stances of the various portions of the book and by several appendixnotes provided to explain expressions and situations not so wellunderstood now as at the time of writing .
There has been no changeof the E. G. White text nor change in the paging from the fourthedition which this succeeds, consequently it harmonizes with theComprehensive Index to the Writings of Ellen G. and Viewsis presented Mrs. White s first bio-graphical sketch, briefly tracing her experience through the Adventmovement of 1840-44. Then follow a number of the earlier visions, many of which had first appeared in print in broadside or periodicalarticle certain expressions of the earlier work[v]which had been misunderstood or misconstrued, and gives additionalcounsel to the church . Its publication preceded by one year the firstpamphlet bearing the title ofTestimony for the Gifts, Volume I, being the first published account of thelong-extended conflict between Christ and His angels and Satan andhis angels, is cherished for its vivid descriptions and its compactness, touching as it does only the more salient points.
In succeeding yearsthis brief story of the conflict was greatly amplified in the fourvolumes ofThe Spirit of Prophecy, Published 1870-84. After widedistribution, this four-book set was replaced by the well-known andwidely read Conflict of the Ages series, presenting the account instill more detailed form, as it had been presented to Mrs. White inmany revelations. Even though the fuller volumes Patriarchs andProphets, Prophets and Kings, The Desire of Ages, The Acts of thePrefaceviiApostles, andThe Great Controversy Present the conflict story inits more complete form, the initial writing of the account as herepresented in its brief, clear-cut, simple form, will, withExperienceand Views, always be in large Trustees of the Ellen G. White , , 1963 Preface to First Edition of Experience and Views We are well aware that many honest seekers after truth andBible holiness are prejudiced against visions.
