Virtual 102, COURSE WIKI Important! Virtual 102 Wiki: You will receive an invitation from PBWiki giving you instructions on how to access and enroll in the COURSE WIKI. You must log on to the WIKI first to start your COURSE work. The Calendar of activities and assignments is located at this site. Be sure to check your email for the invitation (the email address you used when you enrolled at Fullerton College).

3 ELEMENTARY SPANISH II ( span 102) 2 COURSE SYLLABUS ~ CRN 14085 Humanities Division Department of Foreign Languages Fall 2008 If you do not receive an invitation by the first day of classes, then you must immediately contact me by email and provide me with your correct email address. Important! Centro: You will need to download the file titled Centro from the Virtual 102 Wiki for information on how to create your Centro Account. That document will provide you with the COURSE Code that you will need. If you are already enrolled in this COURSE , the Centro document is emailed to you just prior to the start of classes.

4 If you are adding the COURSE and have obtained an authorization code from me, then download the file from the Virtual 102 Wiki. This document will also be given out at the two available campus orientations in the 611 Computer Lab: Monday, August 18: 1:00 - 2:15 Thursday, August 21: 5:00 - 6:15 III. COURSE DESCRIPTION Prerequisites: span 101 F with a grade of C or better or one year of High School SPANISH with a grade of C or better. This COURSE continues to emphasize communicative competences across the basic skills in pronunciation, listening comprehension, speaking, reading and writing.

5 Students are introduced further to the culture of Spain and Latin America. Students who receive credit in this COURSE many not receive credit in span 102HF. IV. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES A. Students completing courses or programs in the Humanities Division will be able to: 1. Use language skills effectively in reading, writing, listening, or speaking to achieve personal, academic, or vocational goals. 2. Use critical thinking skills to examine information, events, and ideas from a broader perspective. 3. Recognize the significance of language and culture in human experience.

Work cooperatively and collaboratively with others. 6. Use campus and/or community resources to participate actively in their own education. B. Upon completion of ELEMENTARY SPANISH II, students will be able to: 1. Manipulate target language orally and in writing in response to discourse related to self, family, social situations, school and work. 2. Respond physically, orally and in writing to written materials in the target language.

7 3. Explain similarities and differences between the cultural practices of the target language and those of other cultures. V. IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW 1. You may take ELEMENTARY SPANISH II on a Credit/No Credit or Audit basis. Students must complete the appropriate form, follow posted deadlines, and obtain all required signatures. Your instructor cannot do any of this for you. Forms may be obtained from the Admissions and Records Office. The last day to file forms is September 5. 2. If you decide to withdraw from the class, you must make that decision by September 6 in order to drop without receiving a W on your transcript.

8 The very last day to drop with a W on your transcript is November 21. Be advised that it is your responsibility to officially drop classes you have stopped attending. Failure to withdraw in this instance will result in a failing grade. Withdrawal is completed through myGateway. 3. The Fullerton College Catalog and the Class Schedule contain a number of policies relating to students that are important to you. Please be sure that you have read these publications thoroughly. 9 GRADING CRITERIA Component Percentage Attendance/Participation 10% Exams 30% Lab and workbook Assignments 15% Textbook Activities 15% Audio Recordings 15% Final Oral Exam 15% Final Grade: 90 100% = A 60 69% = D 80 89% = B 59 % and below = F 70 79% = C VII. ATTENDANCE/PARTICIPATION POLICY Although we won t be meeting every week on campus, you will be required to meet with the class every week online for a total of five hours. This means that you will need to log into Centro at least four times a week in order to complete COURSE activities that are designed to replicate what is done in a class that meets face-to-face for five hours each week.

10 Be advised that just as in a typical face-to face class, students will work not only individually, but also in pairs and in groups in both the Centro COURSE site and the Virtual 102 Wiki. Your instructor will track the number of times you log into the COURSE sites and keep a record of your participation in paired and group activities. Your attendance and participation will count towards 10% of your final grade. Inability to log into the COURSE sites due to a verifiable family emergency, job-related necessity or prolonged illness may be excused at the instructor s discretion.
