The intensity and magnitude of thenoise will vary greatly depending upon ENGINE type aspirated or turbocharged, horse powerdeveloped, means of scavanging, type of fuel used, number of cycles whether 2 cycle or 4 cycle ENGINE the pre-dominant sources that makes up the enginenoise are the ENGINE intake and the purpose of noise control on engines, it is commonpractise to use SILENCERS at intake and exhaust for treatingthe airborne noise.

We have detailed various models ofsilencers in this catalogue that will cover most cases where standard construction SILENCERS do not meetthe particular application, the special SILENCERS can bedesigned to suit specific silencing internal combustion engines, the most widelyused SILENCERS are the reactive type, or chamberconstruction SILENCERS . This type is largely dependent onarea change to reflect sound energy back to the sourceand utilizes the attenuation properties of expansionchambers and perforated GE SERIES MULTI CHAMBER SILENCERS coveredherein are suitable for almost all the type of engines andoperating conditions and provides maximum noiseattenuation within the specified pressure drop of the naturally aspirated and turbocharged enginesare best silenced with these GER SERIES STRAIGHT THRU CHAMBERRESONATOR type SILENCERS are also described hereinwhich are most suitable for very low exhaust systembackpressure

Requirements. Many two cycle turbochargedand some naturally aspirated engines which requires verylow back pressure for maximum ENGINE performance willneed this type of SILENCERS . These are straight thru reactivetype SILENCERS in which exhaust gas flows through a portedtube and resonator which provides adequate silencingwithout imposing much restriction on the gas the standard construction SILENCERS are shown here,we specialize in custom designs for meeting specificrequirements. Various nozzle orientations, dualinlets/outlets, different material requirements and specialsilencers with insulated shellwith high heat absorptivepacking are available to reduce radiated noise and alsoserves the purpose of heat SILENCERS described here will cover most applicationssuch as diesel generator sets, stationary natural gas anddiesel engines, ENGINE driven packages, stationaryindustrial engines OF SILENCER TYPE AND SIZEThe proper selection and sizing of the silencer is of utmostimportance to ensure that pressure drop.

Acousticalperformance and other specific design criteria are selection of the correct type of ENGINE intake andexhaust silencer is determined by the type of ENGINE , theend use of the ENGINE and the degree of silencing , the silencer size selected must accommodate thespecified volume of exhaust gas flow keeping the backpressure within the limits specified by the , ENGINE SILENCERS are broadly classified intofollowing categories depending on the end Grade GE1 SeriesIndustrial Grade GE2 SeriesSemi Residential Grade GE3 SeriesResidential Grade GE4 SeriesCritical Grade GE5 SeriesSuper Critical or Hospital Grade GE6 SeriesThe attenuation curves shown for each model indicates theinsertion loss in dB at different frequencies.

These curvesrepresents the expected dynamic insertion loss at eachfrequency using the respective silencer. The resultantsilenced noise levels may vary to some extent as manyfactors influence the silenced noise which includes theengine size, type, speed, unsilenced noise levels andfrequency distribution. These curves represents theinsertion loss for airborne noise only and has no bearing onstructure borne mechanical noise or pipe radiated these curves can be used as a guide line onlyfor evaluating the total system Williams Steel Division - Building Sound Solutions - sizing the silencer, the important factor to beconsidered is the volume of exhaust flow.

The open flowarea within the silencer must be large enough toaccommodate the exhaust flow without exceeding theengine manufacturer s allowable backpressure. If thesilencer is much too large, then the exhaust noise simplypasses through using only the initial large expansion forattenuation. On the other hand, insufficient size of silencermay cause loss of power and possible damage to correct silencer size can be determined using followingformula:Data Required ENGINE exhaust flow (CFM) Exhaust temperature ( F) Maximum allowable backpressure (inches of water) PV = 4005 C530T+460V = Gas velocity in FPM P = Backpressure, inches of waterC = Silencer pressure drop co-efficient (Table 1)T = Exhaust gas temperature, FNote.

Do not exceed 13000 FPM velocity for sizing thesilencer irrespective of the allowable calculating the velocity, decide flow area required asfollows:Flow area required (FT2) = Exhaust CFMVA fter choosing the silencer size (Table 2) which has flowarea equal to or greater than that calculated, the actualbackpressure can be calculated as follows: P= V actual = Exhaust CFMS ilencer Flow AreaSILENCER SIZEAREA SQ.
