136. Establishment of Small Nursery for Commercial production of Ornamentals and Fruit plants Under National horticulture Mission By M/s ---------------------------------------- ------------------- Address: ---------------------------------------- --------- Submitted to STATE horticulture MISSION, Uttar Pradesh 137. APPLICATION FOR THE GRANT OF SCHEME. 1. Title of the scheme : Establishment of Small Nursery for Commercial production of Ornamentals and Fruit plants 2. Name and address of : Institute/University 3. Name and address of Head of : the Institute/University 4. Name and address of the : Principal Investigator (Brief bio-data enclosed). 5. Name of CO-Investigator : (Brief bio-data enclosed).

6. Name of CO-Investigator : (Brief bio-data enclosed). 7. Actual location : 8. Area Required : 9. Budget : 10. Duration : 138. Introduction India is blessed with a diversity of agro-climatic conditions prevailing in the different regions in the country. A wide range of climatic and edaphic conditions in the Indian sub-continent ensures that it is ideally suited to produce almost all the fruits and ornamental crops. Commercial horticulture has been of recent origin though the traditional fruit and flower cultivation has been going on for centuries. Emphasis has been shifting from agriculture to horticulture for increasing per unit returns. The liberalisation of economy has given an impetus to the Indian entrepreneurs for establishing export oriented horticulture .

Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh have emerged as major horticulture centres in recent times. Farmers face the deficiency in obtaining good quality and sufficient planting material of fruits and flowering is immense need to motivate them and to increase their awareness about improved production technology. horticulture may play great role for income generation and employment opportunities to rural people, who are using traditional cropping system Wheat, Rice Potato, Sugarcane etc. In states like Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, even in Orissa propagation in poly bags is the common practice. This minimizes the maintenance and expenditure on uprooting, transport and also assures almost cent- per cent Establishment .

It is proposed in this proposal that new innovations will be attempted in propagation of fruits and flowering plants. In order to boost up the quality Nursery stock production , there is a need to develop a Small Nursery of Ornamentals and Fruit plants in this zone. Objectives Establishment of mother block of mango and rose and conservation of gladiolus corms of different varieties in the Department. Maintenance of mother stocks for large scale production of quality planting materials /. seedlings of ornamentals and fruit plants of proposed crops. Multiplication of elite clones and promising varieties of proposed crops. Supply of seedlings / palnting materials to State horticulture Mission as per demand on priority basis.

Justification Selection of the elite mother plant will be done with greatest care since the performance of the progeny depends entirely upon the characteristics of the mother plant. While selecting mother plants following basic characteristics have been concidered (i) Consistently high performance and yield over several years (ii) Healthy and free from incidence of diseases and insect pests (iii) Plants with appropriate quality parameters. The maintenance of these blocks will be done regularly so that they remain healthy and free from diseases and insect pests. With the objective of making available enough scion sticks, a new mother plant block will be established by grafting / budding on suitable root stocks or by purchaing from relaible source.

These plants will be pruned regurly to keep them in vegetative phase and to produce enough shoots for propagation round the year. The maintenance of these blocks will be done rigorously to achive the target of healthy, disease and insect free plants / scion. To avoid over crowding and problemof light penetration, canopy management will be practiced depending upon the situation. Maintenance of mother plants A layout of selected crops / varieties will be maintained. The maintenance of mother plants, right from the time of planting to the stage of harvesting will be done. Agro-techniques will be followed judiciously, so that vigorous and healthy plants are made available for multiplication.

Net house and poly tunnel facilities Propagation of fruit and ornamental plants (rose) in north India starts from June and ends of September. Only three to four months are suitable for propagation purpose. The proposed net house and poly tunnels will enhance the propagation period for 7-8 months. Keeping the above points in view net house and poly tunnels will be constructed. 139. Preparation of rooting media and containerization Still most of the fruit plants are multiplied in beds. It has number of limitation like for good earth ball, loam or clay loam soil is required for root stocks and grafted plant require frequent shifting, for effective weed control lot of labour is required, mortality during shifting and transplanting is commen feature, the earth ball carries number of pathogens.

Solarization has been found effective and ecofriendly which involves trapping of solar heat / energy through polythene covering. This raises the temperature of media to the level, where it become lethal to temperature sensitive/ mesophilic soil micro organisms. Polythene covering of soil induces green house effect and raises media temperature. In general, mango, rose and karonda plants are multiplied in open beds, which may get infected with soil borne fungi, nematodes etc. plastic bags of appropriate size will be utilized at various stages of plant multiplication. It is quite cumbersome to sterilize the whole soil and it is also expensive, however limited amout of rooting medium is used in the containers can be sterilized economically, but for gladiolus cultivation sterilized soil is appropriate.

Crops to be under taken for multiplication Mango (cvs. Amrapali, Dashehari-51 etc.). Karonda (Local pink fruited cultivars). Rose (cvs. Melody, Avon, Sugandha, Montezuma, Happyness etc.). Gladiolus (cvs. Oscar, Euro-vision, Debonair, Sapna, Friend Ship etc.). Work plan Layout of Small Nursery . Establishment of infra-structure like net house etc. Procurement of promising cultivars of proposed crops, mother plants and stocks. Establishment of mother block plantation. Raising of root stocks. Large scale propagation in field, rooting trays and plastic bags. Shifting and maintenance. Facilities available Fenced land for the project. Watch and ward for the assets and activity.

Scientific and technical man power. Tractor and field preparation agricultural tools. Assured irrigation facilities. It is also certified that the experts, equipments, other basic facilities and such other administrative facilities as per terms and conditions of the grant, will be extented to investigator(s) throughout the duration of the project. 140. Duration of the project : Five year Budget and infrastructure facilities required S. Particulars Justification Amount No. (Rs.). 1. One shade net house (150 m2) having 50% light diffusion For hardening/. shading nets and sprinkler system of irrigation. propagation of plants. 2. Cost of new/improved varieties seeds/ planting material Required for the and Establishment of mother block.
