3 Therefore each Christian, regardless of their state in life, needs to pray to daily. We do not simply do this because of the personal benefits that prayer may bring -which are apparent to those who do it-, but because our faith is relational. God is not an idea. God is personal; God is tri-personal. Just as we can never have a complete idea of a particular human being in our heart and mind, much less can we know God as if he were an encyclopedia article. If you want to get to know someone, you will need to take time to know them, meet their friends, listen to them. Do the same with God. To this end, in addition to daily prayer and Sunday Mass, I would encourage you to participate in our study on the Gospel according to Matthew that will be starting this week.

5 Mass is celebrated at the UVic Interfaith Chapel from Monday through Thursday at 11:30am throughout the term. Sunday Mass, followed by a student supper at 4:00pm at Holy Cross Church. 3 Catholic Christian Outreach missionaries will invite students into faith studies and I will offer an RCIA for students. Our annual Fall Retreat at Thetis Island s Pioneer Pacific Camp will be Sept 29 Oct 1 and we anticipate about 40 joyful young adults deepening their faith, their hope and their love. Catherine Kelly, a retreat director from St. Marks in Vancouver, will be facilitating this portion of the day. Register: Roger at 250-385-3324. - Adult Faith Formation Matthew: The King and His Kingdom This fall and winter, sacred Heart Parish will be hosting Step 2 - following the Bible Timeline. Matthew: The King and His Kingdom is an exciting study that explores the life and mission of Jesus as recorded in the Gospel.

9 Matthew demonstrates how the promises and prophecies of the Old Testament are fulfilled in Christ, who establishes a New Law and inaugurates the Kingdom of Heaven on earth. Participants will see Jesus as the awaited Messiah who relives the life and struggles of Israel to become the faithful and victorious King. Set in the rich context of Jesus' Jewish culture, this study will help participants understand who Jesus is and what his life and teachings mean for us today. Matthew is an ideal follow-up study to the basic narrative of scripture taught in The Bible Timeline study. Classes will be held on Thursday evenings, starting September 14 to April 5 at 7:00pm.
