The program'sapproach seriously considers the model of Christ's servanthood andencourages Christ's disciples to act in ways appropriate to being "aservant of all. A face to face Encounter experience begins with four day short coursein Christianity, comprised of fourteen talks by lay and clergy on thethemes of God's grace, disciplines of Christian discipleship, and what itmeans to be the church.

The course is wrapped in prayer andmeditation, special times of worship and daily celebration of HolyCommunion. The Emmaus and face to face community is made up ofthose who have attended an Emmaus weekend or a Face to FaceEncounter and who support the four day experience with a prayer vigiland other acts of love and self-giving. A Heart of Ohio Face to FaceEncounter typically is held on four week days beginning at 8:30 AM andends at 4:00 PM. Men and women will attend the same Encounter butwill sit at gender-specific and after the four days, face to face leaders encourageparticipants to meet regularly in small groups. The members of thesmall groups challenge and support one another in faithful living. Thefour-day face to face Encounter experience and follow-up groupsstrengthen and renew Christian people as disciples of Jesus Christ andas active members of the body of Christ in mission to the Upper Room, a ministry unit of the General Board of Discipleship ofThe United Methodist Church, sponsors A face to face Encounter andoffers it through local Emmaus groups around the world.

Althoughconnected through The Upper Room to The United Methodist Church, AFace to Face Encounter is face to face Encounter mirrorsthe Walk to EmmausModelA face to face Encounter gets its name from the story in Luke 24:13-35, which provides the central image for the three-day experience andfollow-up. Luke tells the story of that first Easter afternoon when therisen Christ appeared to the two disciples who were walking togetheralong the road from Jerusalem to Emmaus . Like Christians andchurches who are blinded by preoccupation with their own immediatedifficulties, these two disciples' sadness and hopelessness seemed toprevent them from seeing God's redemptive purpose in things that yet, the risen Christ "came near and went with them," opening thedisciples' eyes to His presence and lighting the fire of God's love in theirhearts.

As they walked to Emmaus , Jesus explained to them themeaning of all the scriptures concerning Him. When they arrived inEmmaus, Jesus "took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them,"and their eyes were opened. They recognized Him as Jesus, the risenLord, and they remembered how their hearts had burned within themas they talked with Him on the road. Within the hour, the two disciplesleft Emmaus and returned immediately to their friends in they told stories about their encounters with the risen Lord, Jesusvisited them again with a fresh awareness of His living , the story of Jesus' resurrection does not conclude with thedisciples' personal spiritual experiences. Jesus ascended to the Father, and the disciples became the body of the risen Christ through theempowerment of the Holy Spirit. The disciples were sent forth by theSpirit to bear witness to the good news of God in Jesus Christ.

Theylearned to walk in the spirit of Jesus, to proclaim the gospel to adisbelieving world, and to persevere in grace through spiritualcompanionship with one face to face Encounter offers today's disciples a parallel opportunityto rediscover Christ's presence in their lives, to gain freshunderstanding of God's transforming grace, and to form friendshipsthat foster faith and support spiritual maturity. While Face to Faceprovides a pathway to the mountaintop of God's love, it also supportspilgrims' return to the world in the power of the Spirit to share the lovethey have received with a hurtful and hurting face to face Encounter is grounded theologically and institutionally inThe Upper Room ministry unit of the General Board of Discipleship ofThe United Methodist , A face to face Encounter is ecumenical.

The program invitesand involves the participation of Christians of many to Face, as well as Emmaus , is ecumenical not only becausemembers of many denominations participate, but because theEncounter seeks to foster Christian unity and to reinforce the wholeChristian community. This is one of the great strengths and joys of theEmmaus and face to face movements. The fact that face to face andEmmaus are ecumenical does not mean they are theologicallyindifferent. On the contrary, face to face Encounters and the Walk toEmmaus are designed to communicate with confidence and depth theessentials of the Christian life, while accentuating those features thatChristians have traditionally held in Upper Room face to face Encounter and the Walk to Emmaus aretightly designed events that are conducted with discipline according toa manual that is universally standard.
