Captain Hale, only twenty-one years of age, undertook a dangerous mission to go behindenemy lines. 8 In April of 1775,American colonists in Boston were waiting for an attack on their city by the British. However, theydid not know if the attack would come by land or sea. Colonists acted as lookouts in Boston s OldNorth Church and had arranged signals to alert the citizens of the attack. From the top of thischurch, everyone in Boston would be able to see the signal.
