However, balled and burlappedcultivars may bloom the first year but not rebloom until their rootsystems are reestablished, which can take up to four scorchFlowering dogwoods are understory trees that do not toleratelong periods of full sun.

In the heat of summer and/or duringperiods of drought the edges of leaves may turn brown. Provideadditional moisture if required or afternoon shade--noon to5 and water stressDrought and water stress can cause leaf scorch, as discussedabove, or it can lead to wilting, especially in recently transplantedspecimens located in full sun, in specimens located in a wet area,or in specimens with a damaged vascular system. Even when thesoil is moist, a plant with a damaged or reduced root system maynot be able to move water to the leaves fast enough to keep upwith water loss in the leaves.

The result is wilted : all root rots, borers, crown cankerPage 2 of 5 SunscaldSunscald is caused by exposure of the bark to the winter sun. Thisusually occurs on the southwest side of the tree, thus sunscald isoften called southwest injury. The tissue beneath the bark breaksdormancy during the day, then freezes during the night, resultingin an elongated wound that appears discolored and and peeling of the bark may follow, as on the maple treepictured on the left, providing an entry way for insects and diseasepathogens. Lookalikes: Dogwood Hansen, VPISU, anthracnose and other leaf spotsLeaf spots on Flowering dogwoods are common and are usuallyonly cosmetic.

A common leaf spot is spot anthracnose with smallreddish-purple spots along leaf veins and/or on flower petals(bracts), pictured on the left. It is more prevalent in wet weatherand usually only causes cosmetic : Do not confuse with Dogwood anthracnose canker, which is deadly to the L. Anderson, USFS, anthracnose cankerThis is a serious fungal disease of dogwoods that is prevalent instates east of Missouri . The disease, Discula destructiva, causesleaf, twig and branch dieback beginning in the lower part of thetree. Numerous small shoots may grow from the trunk. The treeusually dies in three to five years.

It is usually only blight or gray moldGray mold is a common fungal disease on fading flowers. Duringwet spring weather, falling Dogwood petals (bracts) develop mold,as inthe tan spots with pink haloes pictured on the left. Infectedpetals can then infect the leaves they rest upon spreading thedisease. It is usually only State UniversityCrown cankerCrown canker, Phytophthora cactorum, is the most serious diseaseof Flowering dogwoods in the Eastern United States.

Leaves aresmall or undersized and of a lighter green color and may curl. Theplant appears stressed especially during dry periods. Later twigsand branches may die, usually on one side of the tree but thedisease spreads over time. Though not always noticed, the causeof the problem is a canker (dead area on the lower trunk orbranches) that is slowly girdling the trunk and killing thecambium. When the girdling is complete the tree will die. Thedisease is serious and results in tree death. Initial infection couldhave entered through transplanting wounds or through woundscaused by insects, animals, lawn mowers, sunscald or weed not replant a Dogwood in the same area and always protect thebase of trees from : Armillaria root rot, sunscaldPage 4 of 5 FDACS-DPI Archive, FDACS, root rotArmillaria is an aggressive root rot that can attack stressed orotherwise healthy plants.

The fungus girdles the base of the treekilling the cambium (top image). Honey mushrooms at the base ofa plant (bottom image) are the fruiting bodies of the fungus andare a sure sign of the disease. Plant death is quick. Do not replacewith a plant susceptible to armillaria in the same : Any root or stem problem may cause a Dogwood todecline and die, but the honey mushrooms (bottom image) aredistinctive to armillaria root Weidhass, VPISU, Solomon, USFS, borerThe most devastating borer of dogwoods is the Dogwood borer,Synanthedon scitula. The larvae of a clear-wing moth, thiscaterpillar tunnels into the trunk of the tree and eventually girdlesthe tree.

Weakened trees are more susceptible. An early symptommay be the sloughing of loose bark. Crown dieback and thedevelopment of adventitious growth follows. Small wet areas onthe bark in early summer may indicate young borer activity. Onceinside the trunk, control is difficult and trees usually die within ayear or : Other borers, sunscald, weed whip damage, dogwoodanthracnose canker, root rots, crown cankerPage 5 of 5 N. Wright, FDACS-DPI J. Solomon, appletree borerAdult beetles of the flat-headed appletree borer (Chrysobathrisfomorata) lay eggs on the bark of stressed trees.

The young larvaehatch and tunnel into the stems and trunks, which results inbranch dieback or even death of the tree from the feeding. Thefirst sign of a borer infestation may be white, frothy ooze comingfrom cracks and crevices in the trunk or branches. Flat areasdevelop where feeding is occurring and the bark may split in theseareas. Once borers are in the trunk of the tree pesticides areusually ineffective and tree demise is : Other borers, sunscald, weed whip damage, dogwoodanthracnose canker, root rots, crown cankerN. Gregory, UDEL, insectsSeveral scale insects may be found feeding on floweringdogwoods.

Cottony maple scale is common. Look for coloredbumps on a leaf or stem that can be flicked off with the point of aknife or a fingernail. Objects beneath where the scale insects arefeeding may be shiny and sticky, or blackened and February 16, 2012
