2 From the desk of Fr. Jim One week from this Wednesday, March 1st, we will observe Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. It is a day of fast and abstinence. (No meat, only three meals with no snack between them) I encourage you to do something extra during the Lenten season to help you grow spiritually and to help throw away bad habits and sin so you can celebrate Easter renewed in mind, heart and spirit. The parish will provide some materials to help you, if you choose to use them. The Lenten version of The Word Among Us will be available as will a limited number of Our Daily Bread. This small prayer pamphlet is good from March through May. Another resource is Handbook for catholic Families. Currently we have enough of these for one book per household. Please limit yourself to one until every household has had a chance to get theirs. As always there is the Rice Bowl program. Materials will be available for that too.

3 Beside all those things, remember prayer, fasting and almsgiving are the three practices recommended by the Church. Masses for Ash Wednesday will be celebrated at ST. PETER CHURCH on Tuesday evening, February 28, at 6:00 and Wednesday, March 1, at 7:00 PRAY FOR THE SICK AND SHUT-INS OF OUR PARISH. Remember all our parishioners who have special needs. This shade of violet is contrasted with the Blue Violet of Advent. The blue makes reference to the last month of Mary s pregnancy. The Red in Lent refers to the blood of Christ shed for our sins. There is a subtle difference but proof that nothing happens in our Church by accident. WISDOM OR FOOLISHNESS? Sometimes the idea of repentance can seem old-fashioned, na ve, even foolish. But if you re looking for real foolishness, you ll find it in today s readings. We begin with Leviticus and the admonition Take no revenge and cherish no grudge (19:18). We ve heard that message before, of course, so we might forget how far it is from the so-called practical realities of life.

7 St. Paul warns us about being practical, though. Whoever considers himself wise had better become a fool, because the wisdom of this world is foolishness in the eyes of God (1 Corinthians 3:19). This foolishness continues in today s Gospel: Offer no resistance to one who is evil (Matthew 5:39). In fact, turn the other cheek when you ve been slapped. Hand over your coat as well as your shirt. Be like God, who sends sunshine and rain on the bad as well as the good. Be perfect, Jesus says, just as your heavenly Father is perfect (Matthew 5:48). THE FOOLISHNESS OF THE GOSPEL The so-called wisdom of this world tells us that it is foolish to keep working for peace, to keep up the struggle for life against the many and various merchants of death. It is foolish to keep siding with the poor and downtrodden against the economic forces of the marketplace. It is foolish, also, to give to the one who asks of you (Matthew 5:42). Or so goes the wisdom of this world.

8 It is foolish to love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you (Matthew 5:44). It is foolish to let someone get away with striking you in the face, to give in when someone sues you for the very clothes off your back, to let someone make you work without pay. Yet that is what Jesus encourages us to do. Why? Maybe only the poets, the prophets, and the so-called fools can answer, because the wisdom of this world is foolishness in the eyes of God (1 Corinthians 3:19). It does seem, however, that if we want to follow the path of Jesus, we must eventually come down firmly on the side of what the world deems foolishness. Today s Readings: Leviticus 19:1 2, 17 18; Psalm 103:1 4, 8, 10, 12 13; 1 Corinthians 3:16 23; Matthew 5:38 48 Copyright 2007, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.
