Merchantablecontains sapwood and larger knots; used forfence boards, rails and above-ground accepts finishes better than most woods. Some heightenredwood s natural beauty, bringing out the color and the help the wood harmonize or contrast with surroundingstructures. Keep in mind that unfinished redwood will graduallyturn soft driftwood gray. Read the labels on all finish productsbefore water repellent finishwith mildewcide is recommendedto stabilize the color at tan.

Restringthe Gazebo layout now so that the frames can be centered forpositioning the anchor bolts and posts later. Level the frames toeach other and use backfill or stakes to secure the frames whilepouring the anchorsUse adjustable post anchors and quick-settingconcrete. Pour the center footing first and set a 6-inch-long 6x6wooden nailing block at a depth of several inches into its centerso that at least four inches remain above the concrete. Trim thisblock to height later when framing in the perimeter footings and set anchor bolts one at a time. All anchor bolts should measure six feet from the center of thegazebo and five feet from each other.

Check each for plumband level. This isimportant for thegazebo to properly fit together. Make any adjustmentsbefore the concretesets completely about 1 2hour. Once the concrete is set, assemble the post anchorssquare to the center footing andwith the required221 2 angle betweenposts. Remove the 2x decay-resistant redwood grades, Construction Heartor Deck Heart, are ideal choices for the posts. Cut a notch 63 16inches deep and 11 2inches wide in the top ends of each 4x4post for attaching the roof rafters (see detail in rafters section).Trim the 4x4 posts to 9 feet 5 inches. Cut a double bevel of 221 2 beginning 51 2inches from thebottom.

Attach posts to foot-ings at each metal postanchor with 10d nails. Offsetthe posts toward the center ofthe Gazebo and make sure thebeveled edges clear the sidesof the post anchor so that therim joists can be attachedlater. Plumb and brace you think of an octagon as a square with its cornerscut off, you ll realize how simple the shape truly is. A commonmeasurement and trim angle to remember throughout the layoutand construction process is 221 2 . The key, as with any project, isboth careful planning and precise a level building site, use batter boards and string to lay out a square twelve feet on each side.

To check for 90 corners andto find the center of the Gazebo , run strings from corner to opposite corner. The square is true and its sides are parallelwhen the diagonal measurements are equal. Where the two diagonal strings cross, drive a stake into theground to mark the position of the center squared, make a mark along each string 42 inches fromthe corner in both directions. Use a plumb bob and chalk totransfer each mark from the string to the ground, and drive astake to mark the center of each post position. The measure-ment from post center to post center should be 60 inches. Footings Snap chalk lines from post stake to post stake to create the Gazebo outline on the ground.
