William Brewster Sr. was Bailiff of the Archbishop of York's estate and Master of the Queen's Postes (postmaster), living at Scrooby Manor House in Nottingham, England, where royal guests were often entertained. William Jr. attended Cambridge University, noted for its radical, religious ideas. He spent several years in the service of Queen Elizabeth's representative in the Netherlands, a country known for its religious tolerance.

10 When his father died in 1590, young William was appointed to take his place as 'Master of the Postes,' but his spiritual views were sympathetic to the Separatist movement and he began to attend John Smith's Separatists church at Gainsborough where he met William Bradford of Austerfield. When John Smith and his group emigrated to Holland seeking a more tolerant environment, Scrooby Manor House became the meeting place of the Separatists. In 1607, Brewster resigned his official position, but pressure from the authorities increased and Brewster fled to Holland himself.
