Use ofcapital letters and periods is often optional, and the form shownin this Glossary is the one believed to be encountered same abbreviation may stand for a confusing number oftotally different words; conversely, the same word may berepresented by variant Abbreviations . The meaning of an ab-breviation, therefore, often can be determined only from thecontext. A number of Abbreviations which have become acceptedas independent words are included in the Glossary , : cheka, narkom, kolkhoz, marked "Obsol" refer to organizations, activities, orconcepts which are no longer in existence or which now havedifferent names.
