7 " In every age there have beendevout men, who gathered up the rays of light as theyflashed upon their pathway, and who spoke to the people thewords of God. Enoch, Noah, Moses, Daniel, and the long rollof patriarchs and prophets,--these were ministers ofrighteousness. They were not infallible; they were weak, erring men; but the Lord wrought through them as they gavethemselves to His service. p. 13, Para. 1, [GW15]. Since His ascension, Christ the great Head of the church, has carried forward His work in the world by chosenambassadors, through whom He speaks to the children of men,and ministers to their needs. The position of those whohave been called of God to labor in word and doctrine forthe upbuilding of His church, is one of graveresponsibility. In Christ's stead they are to beseech menand women to be reconciled to God; and they can fulfiltheir mission only as they receive wisdom and power fromabove. p. 13, Para. 2, [GW15]. God's ministers are symbolized by the seven stars, whichHe who is the first and the last has under His special careand protection.

8 The sweet influences that are to beabundant in the church are bound up with these ministers ofGod, who are to represent the love of Christ. The stars ofheaven are under God's control. He fills them with guides and directs their movements. If He did not, theywould become fallen stars. So with His ministers. They arebut instruments in His hands, and all the good theyaccomplish is done through His power. p. 13, Para. 3,[GW15]. It is to the honor of Christ that He makes His ministers agreater blessing to the church, through the working of theHoly Spirit, than are the stars to the world. The Saviouris to be their efficiency. If they will look to Him as Helooked to His Father, they will do His works. As they makeGod their dependence, He will give them His brightness toreflect to the world. p. 14, Para. 1, [GW15]. Spiritual Watchmen--Christ's ministers are the spiritualguardians of the people entrusted to their care. Their workhas been likened to that of watchmen.

9 In ancient times, sentinels were often stationed on the walls of cities, where, from points of vantage, they could overlookimportant points to be guarded, and give warning of theapproach of an enemy. Upon their faithfulness depended thesafety of all within. At stated intervals they wererequired to call to one another, to make sure that all wereawake, and that no harm had befallen any. The cry of goodcheer or of warning was borne from one to another, eachrepeating the call till it echoed round the city. p. 14,Para. 2, [GW15]. To every minister the Lord declares: "O son of man, I haveset thee a watchman unto the house of Israel; thereforethou shalt hear the word at My mouth, and warn them fromMe. When I say unto the wicked, O wicked man, thou shaltsurely die; if thou dost not speak to warn the wicked fromhis way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but hisblood will I require at thine hand. Nevertheless, if thouwarn the wicked of his way to turn from it.

10 Thou hastdelivered thy soul." Eze. 33:7-9. p. 14, Para. 3, [GW15]. These words of the prophet declare the solemnresponsibility resting upon those who are appointed asguardians of the church, stewards of the mysteries of are to stand as watchmen on the walls of Zion, tosound the note of alarm at the approach of the enemy. Iffor any reason their spiritual senses become so benumbedthat they are unable to discern danger, and through theirfailure to give warning the people perish, God will requireat their hands the blood of those who are lost. p. 15,Para. 1, [GW15]. It is the privilege of the watchmen on the walls of Zionto live so near to God, and to be so susceptible to theimpressions of His Spirit, that He can work through them totell sinners of their peril, and point them to the place ofsafety. Chosen of God, sealed with the blood ofconsecration, they are to rescue men and women fromimpending destruction. Faithfully are they to warn theirfellowmen of the sure result of transgression, andfaithfully are they to safeguard the interest of thechurch.
