Waldorf West, the first new Library in Charles County in over 20 years, was welcomed by over 300 residents and joined by Emily Ferren, director of Charles County Public Library , to celebrate the opening of the new branch. The County Library Capital Project Grant Program awarded state funds to match the local funds to build Waldorf West.

2 Capital grants are awarded throughout the state of Maryland to im-prove Library facilities. Established by law in 2007, five million dollars a year is mandated to build or renovate Mary-land libraries. Since 2008, over $30 million has been used to gener-ate over $200 million in local matching funds. The Division of Library Development and Services celebrates the great achievement of Charles County and we look forward to other great Library projects, says Irene M. Padilla, Assistant State Superintendent for Libraries. The County Library Capital Project Grant Program is awarded on a competitive grant process.

3 Since the be-ginning of the program, there have been 54 con-struction projects with 10+ earning a green designation. Geographic distribution in the state is as follows: Eastern Shore 10 Western Maryland 5 Southern Maryland 3 Metro Baltimore 32 Baltimore City 4 With the funds from the County Library Capital Project Grant Program, many librar-ies in Maryland have been able to increase services to Maryland residents through the use of new and renovated buildings. Library Associate Training Institute- A ninety-hour orientation course for persons with a bachelor s degree, orienting new staff to the Library environment. skillsoft - Offered online courses for Library staff to learn at their computer. 1,359 courses were completed in 2012. Summer Reading Club - 168,000 registered to continue their reading throughout the summer.

5 SAILOR - Provided broad-band access to public libraries, schools and local governments. Over one million page views were recorded last year. State Library Resource Center and the Regional Libraries State Library Resource Center - expanded its virtual training, reaching libraries and customers across the State, and expanded the number of digital collections on the Maryland Digital Cultural Heritage Web site. Eastern Shore Regional Library - sponsored the 2012 Author Tour featuring Newbery award-winning author Jack Gantos who spoke to well over 1,000 fourth, fifth, and sixth graders and university students.

7 Southern Maryland Regional Library Association - honored five recipients of tuition reimbursement at the third annual Student Learning Reception for county Library staff, pursuing a graduate degree in Library science. Western Maryland Regional Library - coordinated the creation of the new unified online catalog system for the regional Library and the Ruth Enlow Library of Garrett County and Washington County Free Library . 8 Anne Arundel County Public Library - Initiated a partnership with Work-force Development which includes staffing a desk in the Library to answer job-related questions. Enoch Pratt Free Library - Sponsored a community discussion, Talking About Race with the Open Soci-ety of Baltimore. Baltimore County Public Library - Opened a new branch at Sollers Point Multi-Purpose Center. For the fourth year in a row, BCPL circulation topped 10 million. Calvert Library -Calvert Library Assists School Suc-cess, CLASS visited over 5000 students in four grade levels to promote Library services and reading.

9 Caroline County Public Library - Hosted a Com-munity Connectors event to engage the community in the Library and cele-brated 50 years of service. Carroll County Public Library - Digitization of the Carroll County Times Digital Archive enabled customers to search for the desired article online. Cecil County Public Library - Developed SPARK :Students Progress and Achieve with Reading Kits. This ground-breaking program matched 5th and 6th grade students with selected books, delivered directly to the students. Charles County Public Library - Maintained an Outreach van that serves over 120 sites throughout the county.

10 Dorchester County Public Library - Joined the Lower Shore Consortium to become a participating Library in the integrated electronic system. Frederick County Public Libraries - Led the community-wide reading program, which included a visit from Re-becca Skloot, author of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. Ruth Enlow Library of Garrett County Transitioned to a new computer system, Polaris, providing better customer service to their patrons. Harford County Public Library Through a grant from the Smithsonian Institution and Maryland Humani-ties Council, Journey Stories, a Museum on Main Street Exhibition, delighted Harford resi-dent as they explored America s love of travel.
