1 The Career Guidance Company helping your child to Get Ahead! Grade 9 Subject Choice Session info Sheet 2012 Dear Parent, Thank you for your interest in the Grade 9 Subject Choice Session . This is an important step to take as part of your child s career development! We endeavour to provide your child with a highly professional and reputable service. See Q&A below for further insight into what the Session entails. WHAT IS THE Grade 9 Subject Choice Session ABOUT? A one-on-one 55-minute consultation which will enable the psychologist to get a better understanding of your child s career development needs and how to guide him/her further. We look at Subject choices for Grade 10 and help your child to gain insight into future studies and careers.

2 Your child will receive a Career Action Pack to assist him/her in their career planning and development. We can include aptitude testing [+1-hour] at an additional cost. Please see additional details below. WHAT IS THE CAREER ACTION PACK AND HOW WILL IT HELP MY CHILD? The Career Action Pack consists of a workbook and CD. It aims to empower your child to make better career decisions with an easy to use step-by-step program and comprehensive career information. The workbook follows a Five Step Career Planning Guide, taking them through the following topics: Self-awareness, Opportunity-awareness, the Research process, Decision-making process and a Personalised Career Action Plan. The CD has information about different careers, study options, bursaries and the working world.

3 It has been designed for a South African context. It does NOT contain any formal assessments. We can conduct aptitude testing for Grade 9s at an additional fee. The Career Assessment is conducted from mid- Grade 10 upwards. WHERE ARE YOUR COMPANY OFFICES? Parktown: Regus Building, #23 Wellington Road (same road as Parktown Boys High School) Bryanston: Wedgefield Office Park - #17 Muswell Road (Close to new Nicolway Shopping Centre and 1 block away from Dimension Data) and The Campus (Cnr Main and Sloane). DO YOU REQUIRE ANY INFORMATION BEFORE I BRING MY CHILD TO THE Session ? Email your child s latest school report prior to the Session and bring aptitude test results with if possible. WHAT IS THE COST AND HOW DO I PAY? Standard 55-minute Session excluding aptitude testing: R350 Extended 1-hour 55 minute Session including aptitude testing: R850 Payment Options: EFT payment/direct deposit before Session (No card facility, no cheques) CAN I CLAIM FROM MY MEDICAL AID?

Grade 9 Subject Choice Session info Sheet 2012 ADDITIONAL APTITUDE ASSESSMENTS Note: If your child s school does not conduct aptitude testing in Grade 9, we can include aptitude tests at an additional cost. Aptitude testing can assist in identifying strengths and weaknesses in certain areas and identify subjects which will play to your child s strengths.

5 Please note that we do not only look at subjects based on ability but also based on interest areas. It is however useful if your child has the ability to do a Subject that he/she has an expressed interest in as well. See below for a further breakdown. Abstract Reasoning Test This test assesses your child s ability to understand the relationship between abstract shapes and patterns.

6 It helps us to understand your child s learning potential and is a good measure of intellectual ability. It is NOT an IQ test. 2. Numerical Reasoning Test This test assesses your child s ability to work with numerical concepts and number work. 3. Verbal Reasoning Test This test assesses your child s ability to work with words. 4. Mechanical Reasoning Test This test assesses your child s ability to apply basic mechanical principles and to grasp common principles of physics. 5. Spatial Reasoning Test This test assesses your child s ability to manipulate and reason about shapes and spatial relationships. It assesses ability to work with three dimensional relationships.
