The Newsletter Graeagle Community Church September 2018 The Overwhelming Grace of God That Still Awaits T'was grace that brought me safe thus far And grace will lead me home Amazing Grace While studying the book of Ephesians recently with our weekly men s Bible study, a familiar verse struck me in a new and fresh way that caused me to consider something I rarely ponder. In chapter 2, Paul explains the magnificent truth of God s grace and how it has been applied to us in Christ Jesus. He describes how we as individuals have been transformed by the power of God in the gospel. Previously liv-ing as spiritually dead in our sins, God has made us alive together with Christ (2:1-5). Furthermore, just as Jesus was raised from death to life, and then ascended into heaven where he now rules and reigns from his throne of glory, Paul argues that we too have been raised with him and are also seated with him in the heavenly realms (2:6).

Then, in the next verse, Paul says something startling. He switches from looking at the past (what God has done in Christ), and looks to the future (what God will do in Christ) in the coming outpouring of His grace. He states that God has raised us with Christ and seated us with Him, ..so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus (2:7). The riches of God s grace refers to the inexhaustible and overwhelming source of God s gracious character. His lovingkindness knows no end! It is a bottomless well that will supply us with grace in kindness forev-er and ever. This is the truth that surprised me because we often think of God s grace merely in terms of what God has done for us in the past. He has showered us with grace in Christ, specifically in his work on the cross when our sins were forgiven and our pardon from the wrath of God was sealed.

However, Ephe-sians 2:7 points us to the future and reminds us that our greatest experience of God s grace is yet to come in the coming ages. This astonished me because of two things. First, it means that the purpose of our salvation is ultimately for God to be glorified as he lavishes us with his grace. Second, we see that God will lavish us with his grace for an eternity. The reason God made us alive in Christ and seated us securely with him is so that he might make us recipients of everlasting kindness from the storehouses of his amazing grace! Right away, Paul squashes the idea in the next verse that we have somehow done anything to de-serve God s grace. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast (Eph 2:8-9). By definition, God s kindness originates in him, it is extended to us freely, and it is sustained throughout eternity because this is what brings him the greatest glory.

May we truly exalt in the amazing grace of our God as we anticipate its outpouring on us for eternity!
