Transcription of GRAMMARIAN - ToastMentor
1 GENERIC Toastmasters Club ROLES INTRODUCTION script (Don t forget to get an evaluation in your Competent Leader (CL) Manual.) GRAMMARIAN script As the GRAMMARIAN , I have two responsibilities. My first duty is to introduce the Word of the Day. THE WORD OF THE DAY IS . (display the word, pronounce the word, give a definition, use in sentence, repeat word). During the meeting I will make a list of everyone who uses this word. At the end of the meeting I will report those speakers who did use the word. (NOTE: BEFORE THE MEETING please select a word that can easily be included in everyday conversations, but which is different from the way we usually express ourselves. Write/type it on a piece of paper large enough to be seen anywhere in the room. Underneath it, write the definition (in smaller type).)
2 Prepare a sentence as an example of how to use your word.) My second duty is to comment on the use of English during the course of the meeting. During the meeting, I will listen to everyone s word usage for any awkward or misuse of the English language. This can be incomplete sentences, sentences that change direction in midstream, incorrect grammar, or the like. I will report these occasions at the end of the meeting. I will also offer some constructive suggestions for correct usage. TIME KEEPER script One of the lessons of Toastmasters is to learn to express your thoughts clearly and concisely, within a specific time. I will be responsible for keeping track of your time, and for reminding you when you are getting towards the end of your speech. I will display the GREEN SIGNAL when you reach your minimum time.
3 The YELLOW SIGNAL will display when you reach the time mid-way between your minimum and maximum time. I will show the RED SIGNAL when you reach the maximum time for your speech. You will have 30 seconds after the RED SIGNAL is displayed to complete your thoughts. Table Topics speakers must speak at least 1 minute. All other presenters must speak at least 30 seconds BEFORE the minimum scheduled time. At the end of each session, I will report the actual time that each speaker took and who qualifies for voting for best presenter. 4 During the meeting I will listen for words AND COUNT that may be inappropriate expressions such as well, so, you know. Sounds may be ah, um, er. I will also note when a speaker repeats a word or phrase, such as I, I or This means, this means. This is known as a double clutch. At the end of the meeting, I will report the number of times that each speaker used these expressions. VOTE COUNTER As Vote Counter, I will collect the ballots for "best performance" after the Speeches, Table Topics and Evaluations. I will report the winners at the end of the meeting. The Vote Counter does NOT VOTE, except to break a tie. The ballots are found at the bottom of the ballot sheets distributed to each attendee. Visitors may also vote.
