The prone position was first described in Intensive Care unit (ICU) in 1974 for mechanically ventilated patients with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). There had been very little evidence to support the use of the prone position improving outcome or mortality in the ventilated patient with ARDS.
