Moriyama wished to dedicate this report to the memory of Dr. Halbert L. Dunn (1896 1975), whom he described as a man whose visions became a reality at the Sixth Decennial Revision Conference at Palais D'Orsay in Paris on April 30, 1948.

5 Dr. Moriyama (1909 2006). directly participated in many of the 20th century developments described in this report, at the same time taking on a succession of positions and responsibilities between 1940 and 1975 within what ultimately became the National Center for Health Statistics. Following his retirement from federal service, Dr. Moriyama continued to have a significant role in the vital statistics community as director of the International Institute for Vital Registration and Statistics. Throughout his life, Dr. Moriyama continued to challenge his successors to achieve best practices for mortality statistics.
