1 HOLSWORTHY MARKET REPORT Wednesday 2 February 2022 EVERY WEDNESDAY Gates open 6am SALE TIMES 09:45 am - Draft Ewes followed by Finished Lambs 10:30 am - Store Lambs am - Calves and Stirks 11:00 am - Store Cattle followed by Finished & OTM Cattle 11:00 am - Dairy Cattle A full MARKET of stock this week saw the best store cattle reach 1395 on behalf of the Jordan family whilst in the dairy ring the best reached 2200 on behalf of the Johns family of Shebbear HOLSWORTHY Livestock MARKET , New MARKET Road, HOLSWORTHY , Devon, EX22 7FA 01409 253275 138 CULL EWES A good entry of ewes in terms of numbers however still a shortage of best types. Overall top call was on behalf of Messrs Weeks of North Tawton.
2 Geoff Grigg reached 129 while Messrs Prouse of HOLSWORTHY saw their trio at 129. Rod Evely sold his best to for a pen of 6 with 14 vendors over 120. A big percentage of leaner types ranged from 65 - 90 with the best of the rams to 125 for Messrs Drew of Bude. 549 PRIME HOGGS A Strong entry of prime sheep saw a overall top call of 147 for the best of the heavies in from Messrs Barriball of Clawton. Geoff Grigg of Bideford saw his pen of 9 Suffolks hitting whilst Andy Melville of Bradworthy sold (56kg) hoggs to Lighter types reached 130 for Messrs Dennis of Launceston with the best (44kg) hoggs to on behalf of Julian Collings of Treburley. Premium of the day was set at 282ppkg in from Wenfolk farm with David Grigg of Monkleigh at 280ppkg.
3 Overall average for the day stood at 266ppkg. 284 LAMBS & 138 DRAFT EWES & RAMS - am Auctioneer: Steve Prouse 07767 895366 A nice entry today saw more buyers present and in return pushed the up by 20 on the week. Nigel & Helen Colwill of Bude topped the day at 510 for the best of their 3 British Blue reared calves with others at 505. John Elliott & family of Bradford saw a very strong 485 for the pick of their 14 British blue calves (12 weeks) with Angela Dilling of Highampton close up at 455. Plenty of under 42 day olds were forward today, making between 320 - 360 with a lot of interest for the best! Rob Veale of Halwill saw his Angus bull calves hit 290 with Messrs Goaman in 2nd place at 250 & 240.
4 Herefords topped at 210 for Colin Stevens, whilst Simmentals topped at 290 for the Wearing family of Tavistock. A big entry of Limousins todays reaching 375 for Messrs Dilling with Messrs Pengilly at 310. All in all another excellent day at HOLSWORTHY . itting breed BULLS HEIFERS No Top Ave No Top Ave A. 5 Although a stronger trade than previous weeks, 1395 was the top this week for 3 cracking, strong now farm assured British Blue steers 21mth from Messrs RL & S Jordan of Broadwood who sold steers at 1310. British Blue steers from Messrs Thorne of Umberleigh sold at 1335 & 1250. Single suckled Charolais 21mth from Mr S May of Week St Mary sold well at 1320 while single suckled Limousins went at 1300. 20mth younger wintering continentals saw most steers 16-18mths at 900- 1000 and heifers at 850- 950 more required. YOUNGER STORES A larger entry this week with the strongest 15mth British Blue steers reaching 1000 for Mr D Folland of Langtree, whos younger British Blue steers made 940 & 3850 for 2 at 12mths.
6 Younger 7-8mth continentals saw Messrs RWH Dilling of Highampton realised 790 for 2 with heifers from the same farm at 910 & Hereford steers at 8mth making 705. A good run of 6-9mth Friesian x Limousin from S Hockridge of Bideford raced away to 710 for 5 Limousins 6-8mth with British Blue x Charolais at 570- 630. Top this week was 975 for a now farm assured 7 year old Bazadaise cow from Mr RE Smith of Launceston who s now farm assured British Blue cow realized 960. OTM weighing cows 125p was the top this week for a 730k cow from Messrs JLC Farms of Launceston realising 150 STORE CATTLE 11 am Auctioneer: David Kivell 07899 960272 GRAZING COWS Auctioneer: David Kivell 07899 960272 The early month sale saw a good trade for a wide range of cattle forward.
7 Topping the sale and the fresh milk section was Newrock Silverstar Delilah 28 GP84 a 2nd calving cow yielding 44 Kgs on behalf of Messrs RAS Johns and Partners of Shebbear at 2200. The Johns Family also sold another 3rd calving cow Newrock Perseus Peace 261 GP84 at 2050 with their consignment averaging a very impressive 2016. Messrs MP JA & PJ Cherry of Bodmin also sold a 2nd calving cow yielding 38 Kgs at 1950. Heifers topped at 1750 for a fresh Friesian-type heifer yielding 26 Kgs and sold on behalf of Messrs LT Harvey & Sons of Penzance who also sold other heifers to 1650. Older cows sold to an excellent trade topping at 1520 for a 5th calving cow sired by Sherdon Oman on behalf of the Harvey Family. In Calf Heifers sold to a flying trade topping at 1620 for Pordenack Tuscan Dior due March/April to pedigree Aberdeen Angus on behalf of Messrs NH Semmens & Sons Ltd of Penzance.
8 The same vendor also sold Heifers to 1580, 1550, 1520, 1500 and 1480 with their consignment of 38 averaging 1369. Roger Adams of Chapel Farms Ltd of Newquay sold a run of Dry Cows and In Calf Heifers topping at 1500 for a Heifer due to calf in March to pedigree Hereford. David & Shelley Turner of St Giles in the Wood sold a consignment of 10 Bulling Heifers to a top of 760 for a group of 4 with an impressive average of 746. Mr R Wooldridge of Halwill sold a January born Heifer Calf at 150.
