Page 5 holy Ghost Church , Providence RISeptember 18, 2022 983 PARISH ANNOUNCEMENTSThe Early YearsOOne hundred years ago (1889) the community of holy Ghost Parish began with a small group of Italian immigrants and the service of the Scalabrini Fathers.

8 The first steps to being a mission in Providence were taken on September 19, 1888, when Father Francesco Zaboglio, Bishop Scalabrini s representative, sent a letter to Piacenza, Italy, to Bishop Scalabrini. He wrote: This morning I saw the Bishop of would like a priest, who, having his own residence, would be the pastor of one thousand, five hundred Italians in this city. Believing that their numbers will soon grow, he would like to start a parish now. Bishop Scalabrini approved the idea and insisted that a mission for Italians immigrants be established in Providence. Father Zaboglio visited Bishop Matthew Harkins of Providence several times before sending Father Amos V. Astorri and Father Luigi Paroli to conduct a three-week mission in July, 1889. Father Paroli, the founding pastor of holy Ghost Parish, had received the Missionary s Crucifix from Bishop Scalabrini during a solemn ceremony which was held in the Basilica of Saint Antonino (Piacenza), on January 24, 1889.

9 Arriving in Boston on February 7, he became Pastor of Sacred Heart Church in the north end of Boston until August. At the time Father Paroli arrived in Providence to start the parish. Acting in the name of Bishop Harkins, and with his constant support, he gathered the Italian community in the Old Cathedral on High Street. Then, recognizing the need for a Church of their own, the parishioners formed a committee to raise funds for a location. The committee was headed by Tomaso Mancini, President; Alfonso Cambio, Vice President; Giovanni Mariani, Secretary; Giovanni Caproni, Treasurer. They acted as a steering committee of thirty community members to raise $1,300 to secure a location. Using the funds collected, Father Paroli established a small chapel on Brayton Avenue, where he celebrated Mass for the first time for the new parish on September 22, 1889.

10 Although Fr. Paroli was Pastor only until 1892, he, nevertheless, set in motion a worshipping community that would affect Italian-Americans for many decades to come. On November 4, 1889, the new parish was incorporated in the State of Rhode Island with the following officers Bishop Matthew Harkins, Bishop of the Diocese of Providence, President. Reverend Michael McCabe, Vicar General. Reverend Luigi Paroli, Pastor Tomaso Mancini and Antonio Barone, Lay Trustees The corporate name of the parish was Corporation of The Church of the holy Ghost , Providence, Rhode Island.
