Pastor s Letter april 25/26 Dear Parish Family, This past week was a wonderful one for our In Nomine Domini renewal projects. It is good to see things beginning to move and substantial progress being made toward our goal. So here, in brief, is an update on our work. Every project has its obstacles. For Father Trench it was the owls that nested in the bell tower! Work on the church renovation had to take a breather while these beautiful birds completed their nesting season.

7 For us, it was the much less glamorous need to clean up the debris and asbestos insulation from the crawl space under our church. I am happy to report that this project went much more quickly and efficiently than planned. As of this past Thursday, the work was complete and we had passed the clean workplace inspection required by New York State. Hallelujah! I am so grateful to John Miracola and his team from Chesapeake for a wonderfully professional job. We also received news this week that the equipment needed for the renewal of our bell tower will be delivered this week. With this equipment on site and the crawl space clean, we will be able to schedule installation of the strikers and controller for our bell tower. This is especially good news since our aging bell controller has finally given up the ghost this past week and our tower is now silent.

8 We look forward to hearing our bells with new mounts, strikers, controllers, and carillon in just a few weeks. We were also able this week to settle the details for engineering our heating and air conditioning system. Integrating a modern system into our 107 year old Basilica proved even more daunting that I had imagined. I will give you the details of this in next week s bulletin. But we have finally found an engineering solution that will bring us into the future and preserve the structure and architecture of this historic church. It is wonderful to know that we are on the right track at last. I thank you all for your patience and support. Now that preparation work is complete I am anxious to see our projects move forward for the good of our community. I will certainly keep you posted on our plans and progress. Sincerely yours in Christ, Rev.

For more information email: The Faith that Does Justice Every five years, the nations of the world gather at the UN for a Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty Review Conference.

10 This year that conference begins on april 27th. In anticipation of that critical conference, Pax Christi Metro New York invites you to reflect on these words of Pope Francis: The desire for peace, security and stability is one of the deepest longings of the human heart. It is rooted in the Creator who makes all people members of the one human family. This desire can never be satisfied by military means alone, much less the possession of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction. Peace cannot "be reduced solely to maintaining a balance of power between enemies; nor is it brought about by dictatorship" (Gaudium et Spes, 78). Peace must be built on justice, socio-economic development, freedom, respect for fundamental human rights, the participation of all in public affairs and the building of trust between peoples.
