This year, in addition to the IARC supporting the facilitation of the Learning Essential Approaches to Palliative and End of Life Care course,we will also be running another Team Effectiveness Series as well as hosting McMaster University s Leadership From Within for the goal of filling existing gaps in training and education the IARC has been offering educational programs which arespecifically designed to meet the learning goals and needs of palliative end-of-life healthcare on a Challenging YearA regular visitor to Ian AndersonHouse was the deer, photographed hereby a family member, who.

Together withhis family, came to be fed and admiredby our families and staff during lastyear s hard past year was a very busy one forour hospice. Our team of five part-timeRN Home Co-ordinators headed byPeggy and Tracey made a recordnumber of visits to families in thecommunities of Halton and Peel, notonly to those referrals seeking admissionto Ian ANDERSON HOUSE , but also tomany caregivers in the community look-ing for advice and support. By year-end,based on numbers for the first ninemonths in 2014, the number of homevisits is expected to reach 600 and theadmissions to our hospice to reach those numbers indicate a growingtrend they are a clear indication, notonly that more practical support shouldbe provided to caregivers in the commu-nity, but also that more necessary timebe given for advice and support by thevisiting nurses contracted by the is an obvious gap in our currentHealth Care system that must beaddressed if more visits to Hospitalemergency rooms.

Particularly thosewith few, if any, designated palliativebeds are to be HOUSE also saw some majorchanges in 2014. The two major oneswere the installation by Oakville Hydroof a natural gas line running fromWinston Churchill Blvd. which replacedour reliance on propane use and is awelcome, long awaited improvement forgeneral efficiency and reduced operatingcost. The second improvement was thereplacement of the old wooden standardlight poles in our parking lot, whichwere funded by our long-time supporterThe Canadian Donner Foundation, thathave much improved the lighting on thelot and are also energy and cost are very fortunate to have a careteam at Ian ANDERSON HOUSE that notonly met and dealt with all thechallenges of 2014 but also went aboveand beyond.

Peggy and Tracey and ourHome Co-ordinator team made homevisits to all calls made for referrals andsupport and were also always at thehospice to welcome and settle in newresidents and their families. All of that,as well as handling their regular dailyhospice responsibilities and increasednecessary paper work was efficientlycoped with. Our Personal SupportWorkers, who do all the major housecleaning, keep the bedrooms in thenecessary condition and provide theirround-the-clock resident care, also foundtime to spend with the increasednumber of families and visitors.

Our IanAnderson Volunteers cheerfully handledthe increased number of phone calls, light household duties, families andvisitors and still took the necessary timeto spend with families and visitors overa cup of coffee in the kitchen andshowing and explaining the day-to-dayfunctioning of our hospice. Behind the scenes our part-timeadministrative staff, Margaret andLesley, have been handling a steadilyincreasing work load. Margaret is alsoresponsible for hiring individuals andcompanies to maintain the highstandards that are set for the smoothfunctioning of the HOUSE and for thegardens and grounds that are so muchenjoyed by residents and families.

Bothalso volunteer their time working at allof our events. Monique, our ResourceCentre Administrator is also our jack ofall trades who efficiently handles all thesmall emergencies that are normaloccurrences in every home. She keeps aclose eye on the work being done on theexternal improvements and is alsolargely responsible for organizing ourfundraising Members of our Board meet toreview all that is happening at thehospice and, when necessary, combinetheir specific areas of professional exper-tise to make decisions that will have apositive impact on the overall function-ing of IAH.
