YOUTH MINISTRY NEWS Introduction by: Glen McCall Although the summer months are a time to slow down from the normal pace of life, sometimes it becomes an opportunity to actually take on more of a challenge with the extra time. That is exactly what a number of our teenagers in both our Jr. High and High School Youth Ministry programs did! On two separate occasions, each group spent several days in service to the people of the Archdiocese of Newark and the Diocese of Paterson. Using the Archdiocesan Retreat Center in Kearny as their base of operations, group members spent a day of service at various locations in the area. Locations varied, giving each day its own unique flare. Whether it was sorting donated food and clothing at the Fr. English Food Pantry in Paterson; preparing and serving meals to the homeless at St.

Ann s Soup Kitchen in Newark or cleaning and painting a Catholic school in Bloomfield, a sense of accomplishment and a new insight on the meaning of service to others was experienced by all. Here are just a few reflections by some of the The Mission Trip was a great learning experience that I believe everyone should participate in at least once. You learn things about yourself that you may have not known. Personally I learned how self-motivated I can be to complete a task even when I struggled. One major lesson that I obtained after experiencing the trip was that the smallest gesture or action can help in great measures. Even things you wouldn't expect like folding clothes or restocking shelves. Also interacting with other members of your group and meeting new people made the experience more enjoyable. Overall I would highly recommend this trip to anyone. Taira Torres This past mission trip, I was able to regain a part of my faith that had been missing for quite some time.

Service has always been a part of my life, but with all the craziness that comes with graduating high school, I put this passion of mine on the back burner. Through talking to Carlos, who runs the food pantry at the Father English Center, he reminded me of the difference that we can make. Something 3 RIDGEWOOD, NEW JERSEY COME ONE! COME ALL! OUR lady OF mount CARMEL BLOCK PARTY SUNDAY, SEPT. 16TH 1:30PM-5:00PM BEHIND THE CONVENT RAIN OR SHINE Fun ~ Food ~ Friends ~ Games! as small as organizing shelves, can make the biggest impact on someone s life. Ultimately, I learned that no matter how hectic life can seem, there is always time to make a difference in someone s life. Tara Lahey The Mission Trip was an excellent time of reflection for me. I would recommend for everyone to go on it at least once out of their four years in high school. It opened my eyes to how dedicated the workers/volunteers at each site are to their job of helping others.

Throughout the week I also realized that the smallest little actions can help someone immensely. I learned this from a conversation I had with the woman that ran Sacred Heart. As we spoke she mentioned how us volunteering for the week was going to help the school a lot. She also said that the week that we all helped clean the school was the only week out of the whole year that is was going to be cleaned. Having this conversation with her and many other workers taught me that volunteering is very important and useful for others that are less fortunate. In the end this trip was an amazing experience that I would highly recommend to everyone. Thais Torres STEWARDSHIP Be doers of the word and not hearers In today s 2nd Reading, James reminds us that our actions will count more than our words. What do you do to live God s word? Do you share your Time in prayer with God? Do you use your Talent(s) to help those in need and to build God s Kingdom?

Do you offer your Treasure to do the same? The Christian Steward does all these? Why don t you? The parish Stewardship of Treasure in the in-pew collection last week was $16,685. Today s tithe for Sharing Our Gifts will be added to the National Collection to help the Church in Central and Eastern Europe, taken up today. God bless all who are generous with their treasure to build the Kingdom.
