R. thru .200 Granville county , North Carolina was formed in 1746 from Edgecombe county . It is located in the north east section of the state and is bounded by Vance, Franklin, Wake, Durham, and Person counties, and by the state of Virginia. (William S. Powell, The NC Gazetteer, p. 197) Reported here is an Index of the Loose Estate Papers generated by the citizens of the county from the time the county was formed to 1919. The Papers in this series have been arranged alphabetically by surnames, A to Z , placed in individual folders, then placed in 200 Fibredex boxes. As of December, 1998, there were Papers for 4,664 , Estate Papers are formed when a person dies, and the label on the folder is the name of the deceased, or his widow, or a guardian of the deceased minor children, or some dispute over the deceased person s is a great variety in the type or classification of material in the various folders.

2 Some folders contain only a single piece of paper while other estates fill two, or three, or even six folders bulg-ing with documents. The names of the heirs of the deceased and many other family members can be found in these records. Inventories and sales of the property of the deceased, including slaves, have great genealogical last records in this series are in box #200, and the very last, Loose Estate Papers identified with a particular name are those of Doctor David Zwillings. In addition, there are several miscella-neous folders. One folder is labeled List of Estates Records (wills, guardians) to be recorded - 1810 and contains just what it says; a list. Another folder List of Guardians (minors not named) 1886 , then Miscellaneous Estate Records, Deceased not named, undated, 1795-1849 (broken series) . Closing out this box is a folder labeled List of administrators and executors who failed to make returns 1882-1886 .. and the last folder is a large one, Miscellaneous estates records, deceased not named 1850-1904 (broken series).

3 Every effort was made to record the names and sequence of the records as accurately as possible even if a particular record was slightly out of sequence. The date of the record is more important than the box number in that the records for a particular county are often expanded as additional records come in. In some cases, no dates (years) were noted on the folders. I notified the Archives staff of any glaring errors I found while completing this work, but I made no attempt to change anything.
