Industrial engineering , MSIE 1 Industrial engineering , MSIEThe Department of Mechanical and Industrial engineering (MIE) offerscomprehensive research and educational programs for studentspursuing the Master of Science (MS) in Industrial engineering . Industrialengineering (IE) applies mathematical modeling and analytical toolsto make better decisions for designing and managing efficient andeffective systems. IE is applied in many areas, including healthcaresystems, supply chains, logistics and transportation Engineering, manufacturing, sustainability, resilient systems, energy systems, andhuman-in-the loop systems. We partner with organizations rangingfrom startups to well-established corporations, to government andnongovernment organizations. 2 Our research in healthcare systems engineeringuses methods from lean six-sigma tools to advanced mathematicalmodels to improve system and product reliability and optimize healthcareprocess quality, delays, cost, efficiency, and effectiveness nationalpriorities. Recent healthcare applications include improvements inscheduling, readmissions, cost reductions, cancer care, and healthservices planning. We use stochastic and simulation modeling tostudy environmental issues related to green manufacturing, productrecovery, and end-of-life management. We use data analytics fordesigning prognostics and preventive strategies for manufacturingoperations. Our research and teaching together are designed to developIE practitioners who can work, innovate, and excel in a variety ofbusinesses. These extensive programs and course work allow forthe selection of a degree that meets a wide variety of personal andprofessional Degree RequirementsTo be eligible for admission to any of the MS degree programs, aprospective student must hold a Bachelor of Science degree inengineering, science, mathematics, or an equivalent field.

Students in allmaster s degree programs must complete a minimum of 32 semesterhours of approved course work (exclusive of any preparatory courses)with a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of Students cancomplete a master's degree by pursuing one of the three tracks:course work option, project option, and thesis option. Specific degreerequirements for each of these tracks can be found under the ProgramRequirements tab. Also, students can complete their master's degreeeither on a full-time or part-time basis; however, certain restrictions Ethics RequirementAll MIE graduate students are required to complete a brief online sessionon Responsible Conduct of Research and Plagiarism during their firstsemester of full-time study. All enrolled students will be sent properinstructions on how to complete this assignment and satisfy thisimportant requirement.

The outcome of the online session will be filedwith the student s and Research AdvisorsAll nonthesis students (students doing course work or project options)are advised by the academic advisor designated for their respectiveconcentration or program. Thesis option students must find a researchadvisor within their first year of study and may have thesis reader(s) atthe discretion of their research advisor. The research advisor must bea full-time or jointly appointed faculty or affiliated member of the MIEdepartment; otherwise, a petition must be filed and approved by the MIEG raduate Affairs Committee. If the research advisor is outside the MIEdepartment, a faculty member with 50 percent or more appointmentsin the MIE department must be chosen as the co-advisor. Thesis optionstudents are advised by the academic advisor designated for theirconcentration before they select their research advisor(s).

Plan of Study and Course SelectionIt is recommended that all new students attend orientation sessionsheld by the MIE department and the Graduate School of engineering toacquaint themselves with the course work requirements and researchactivities of the department as well as with the general policies, procedures, and order to receive proper guidance with their course work needs, all MSstudents are strongly encouraged to complete and submit a fully signedPlan of Study (PS) to the department before enrolling in second-semestercourses. This form helps the students manage their course work aswell as helps the department to plan for requested course PS can be modified at any time as students progress in their degreeprograms. However, requests for changes in the PS must be processedbefore the requested change actually takes place. A revised PS formmust also be approved and student s academic advisor must approve all courses prior toregistration.

Students may only use courses taken with the approvalof the academic advisor toward the 32-semester-hour minimumrequirement. However, students may petition the MIE Graduate AffairsCommittee to substitute graduate-level courses from outside theapproved list of pursuing study or research under the guidance of a facultymember can elect the project option by taking Master s Project (IE 7945). An MS project must be petitioned to the MIE Graduate Affairs Committeeand approved by both the faculty member (instructor for MS Project)and the student's academic advisor. The petition must clearly state thereason for taking the course; a brief description of the goals; as well asthe expected outcomes, deliverables, and grading doing the course work option may petition the MIE GraduateAffairs Committee to substitute up to a 4-semester-hour IndependentStudy (IE 7978).

An independent study must be approved by theacademic advisor. The petition must clearly state the reason fortaking the course; a brief description of goals; as well as the expectedoutcomes, deliverables, and grading scheme. Students in other options( , thesis or project) are not eligible to take independent for MS Students (course work only, project, or thesis)Students accepted into any of the MS programs in the MIE departmentcan choose one of the three options: course work only, project, orthesis. Please see the Program Requirements tab on the top menuof this page for more information. MS students who want to pursueproject or thesis options must find within their first year of study a facultymember or a research advisor who will be willing to direct and supervisea mutually agreed research project or MS thesis. Moreover, students whoreceive financial support from the University in the form of a research, teaching, or tuition assistantship must complete an who complete the thesis option must make a presentationof their thesis before approval by the department.

The MS thesispresentation shall be publicly advertised at least one week in advance2 Industrial engineering , MSIEand all faculty members and students may attend and participate. Ifdeemed appropriate by the research advisor, other faculty members maybe invited to serve as "thesis readers" to provide technical opinions andjudge the quality of the thesis and of Program/ConcentrationStudents enrolled in any of the MIE department programs orconcentrations may change their current program or concentration nosooner than the beginning of their second full-time semester of study. Inorder for the program or concentration change request to be consideredby the MIE graduate affairs committee, the student must be in goodacademic standing and have completed at least 8 semester hours ofrequired course work in their sought program at Northeastern .

See here( ) for instructions on how to request aprogram or concentration Certificate OptionsStudents enrolled in a graduate degree program in the College ofEngineering have the opportunity to pursue an engineering graduatecertificate in addition to or in combination with the MS degree. Formore information please refer to Graduate Certificate Programs ( ).GORDON INSTITUTE OF engineering LEADERSHIPM aster's Degree in Industrial engineering with Graduate Certificate inEngineering LeadershipStudents may complete a Master of Science in Industrial Engineeringin addition to earning a Graduate Certificate in engineering must apply and be admitted to the Gordon EngineeringLeadership Program in order to pursue this option.
