3 An innovative way to inspect, guard and maintain pylons is using drones fitted with cameras. We're piloting them now, but the autonomy of these drones is our task for the future. What is the project about? Innovation , here deploying drones fitted with cameras, is changing the way we maintain the pylons of our overhead lines. Drones speed up pylon inspections, can get up really close, do not interrupt the power supply and incur fewer safety risks. 6 What is the project about? Every TSO in Europe is responsible for maintaining the balance between injection and offtake (including import and export) in their control area. Discrepancies between injection and offtake create imbalances that have to be resolved by the system operator. Machine learning and all available data is used to forecast the imbalance of the system 15 min ahead to support system operators in their understanding and decision making As a system operator it has become much harder to understand system imbalance scenarios. The impact of variable generation, such as wind power and solar energy, is just one consideration, but there are also others, like increased activity on intraday markets, flexible generation units and so on. This means that system operators have to process and interpret huge quantities of data very fast.

Develop and operate the system New reliability management Garpur - New reliability management The increasing uncertainty of generation due to RES, combined with the opportunities provided by demand-side management & energy storage, call for imagining new reliability criteria with a better balance between reliability & costs. The needed reliability of the power grid requires that in case of fault of a relevant network or production element (N-1), remaining assets in operation must be capable of accommodating the new situation without violating the network's operational security limits.
8 What is the project about? The purpose of this project is to develop new methods for the operating the Belgian power system by shifting towards a more probabilistic risk assessment. New approaches are required to evaluate grid reliability taking into account the variability and inherent uncertainty of the RES production. The methodologies developed in the frame of GARPUR have been tested in close to real life test cases that have been demonstrated in Island, Norway, France by their respective TSOs. Societal benefits have been demonstrated with for instance more efficient grid use, increased reliance on wind or other variable generation, less capacity given to the reserves and more capacity for power transmission, and finally, more transmission capacity given to the market.

Elia is therefore involved in different projects studying and demonstrating smart ways of exploring flexibility and this even from small consumers in the residential sector. What is the project about? We have conducted a demo in one of our own buildings: the objective was to control the building's power consumption by modifying the operation of specific devices to understand how flexibility can be provided and what the size of the flexibility can be.
