LINE vs. LOADA cable consists of 2 or 3 wires. Cable WiresLINE cable:Delivers power from the service panel (breakerpanel or fuse box) to the GFCI.

3 If there is onlyone cable entering the electrical box, it is theLINE cable. This cable should be connected tothe GFCI's LINE terminals cable:Delivers power from the GFCI to anotherreceptacle in the circuit. This cable should beconnected to the GFCI's LOAD terminals LOAD terminals are under the yellowsticker. Do NOT remove the sticker at this Turn the power OFFPlug an electrical device, such as a lamp orradio, into the receptacle on which you areworking. Turn the lamp or radio ON. Then, goto the service panel. Find the breaker or fusethat protects that receptacle. Place the breakerin the OFF position or completely remove thefuse. The lamp or radio must turn , plug in and turn ON the lamp or radio atthe receptacle's other outlet to make sure thepower is OFF at both outlets.

4 If the power is notOFF, stop work and call an electrician tocomplete the Identify cables/wiresImportant:DO NOT install the GFCI receptacle in anelectrical box containing (a) more than four (4)wires (not including the grounding wires) or(b) cables with more than two (2) wires (notincluding the grounding wire). Contact aqualified electrician if either (a) or (b) are you are replacing an old receptacle, pull it outof the electrical box without disconnecting thewires. If you see one cable (2-3 wires), it is theLINE cable. The receptacle is probably inposition C (see diagram to the right).Remove the receptacle and go to step 7A. If you see two cables (4-6 wires), thereceptacle is probably in position A or B(see diagram to the right). Follow steps a-eof the procedure to the : box with two (2) cables (4-6 wires):(a) Detach one cable's white wire and hotwires from the receptacle and cap eachone separately with a wire sure that they are from the samecable.

5 (b) Re-install the receptacle in the electricalbox, attach faceplate, then turn the powerON at the service panel.(c) Determine if power is flowing to thereceptacle. If so, the capped wires are theLOAD wires. If not, the capped wires arethe LINE wires.(d) Turn the power OFF at the service panel,label the LINE and LOAD wires, thenremove the receptacle.(e) Go to step in circuit:The GFCI's place in the circuit determines ifit protects other receptacles in the circuit:Placing the GFCI in position A will alsoprovide protection to "load side"receptacles B and C. 7 For a box with no grounding terminal (diagram not shown): Connect the LINE cable'sbare copper (or GREEN) wire directly to the grounding terminal on the GFCI receptacle. For a box with a grounding terminal (diagram shown above): Connect a 6-inch bare copper(or GREEN) 12 or 14 AWG wire to the grounding terminal on the GFCI. Also connect asimilar wire to the grounding terminal on the box. Connect the ends of these wires to theLINE cable's bare copper (or GREEN) wire using a wire connector. If these wires arealready in place, check the the installation: Fold the wires into the box, keeping the grounding wire away from the WHITE and HOTterminals. Screw the receptacle to the box and attach the faceplate. Go to step WireConnections:Side Wire:8.

8 Test your workWhy perform this test? If you miswired the GFCI it may not prevent personal injury or death dueto a ground fault (electrical shock). If you mistakenly connect the LINE wires to the LOAD terminals, the GFCI will still operate like an ordinary receptacle, but it will not interrupt aground :(a) This GFCI is shipped from the factory in the tripped condition and cannotbe reset until it is wired correctly and power is supplied to the device. Pluga lamp or radio into the GFCI (and leave it plugged in). Turn the power ONat the service panel. Ensure that the GFCI is still in the tripped conditionby pressing the TEST button. If the lamp or radio is ON and the IndicatorLight (Cat. Nos. 8598 and 8898 ONLY) is ON go to the Troubleshootingsection because LINE and LOAD wiring connections have been reversed.

9 (b) Press the RESET button fully. If the lamp or radio turns ON and theIndicator Light (Cat. Nos. 8598 and 8898 ONLY) turns ON, the GFCI hasbeen installed correctly. If the GFCI can not be reset, go to theTroubleshooting section.(c) If you installed your GFCI using step 7B press the TEST button, then pluga lamp or radio into surrounding receptacles to see which one(s), inaddition to the GFCI, lost power when you pressed the TEST button. DONOT plug life saving devices into any of the receptacles that lost a "GFCI Protected" sticker on every receptacle that lost power, thenpress the RESET button to reset the GFCI.(d) Press the TEST button (then RESET button) every month to assure proper operation.
