What are the three most significant factors which impact on your personal health? 1 WEEK 1 What is a healthy person? ! Students respond to Thinking questions. (see Mary) ! Pre assessment. Students do a magazine search of images that depict healthy people ! Share collages and discuss choices. Teacher records student statements. ! Group discussion- What does it mean to be healthy? ! Identify different dimensions of a healthy person- physical, social, mental, spiritual and emotional. ! How do our collages reflect these dimensions? ! In groups students group recorded key words under one of the 5 headings. ! In my opinion activity . Use statements about health and students plot their opinions on a 5 point scale. ! WEEK 2 How can we look after our bodies? (Diet/food) ! ! What is a Healthy Lifestyle? ! Benefits of a Healthy Lifestyle P9 Healthy Choices !

3 How healthy is your lifestyle? Students reflect on and describe their lifestyle. ! Pose the question- What are the three most significant factors that impact on your personal health? ! Students begin personal research in areas they have listed and develop a plan to overcome problems they have. Final Assessment task (Incorp Healthy Goals plan pp XIX, Healthy Choices) ! Students record everything they eat and drink in a daily diary. ! Transfer items onto a healthy diet pyramid to see who has a balanced diet. Discuss alternative snack foods. ! View video-Our Wonderful Bodies Series Vol 3 (part 2) ! Discuss fad diets, media influences, advertising, peer pressure. ! Using the nutrition info panel on packaging. ! Healthy lunch choices and snacks and how to pack them hygienically. WEEK 3 How can we look after our bodies? (Exercise) ! Brainstorm things people do to keep our bodies fit and healthy. ! Research different sources to find out more about sports and fitness activities !

4 Students list the exercise they like to do most and explain why. ! Keep a fitness diary of all the sports and physical exercise we do over a period of time. Compare and draw conclusions ! Students participate in a fitness session where they are timed doing particular activities. They use this information to set fitness goals and how they are going to achieve them (These are to be measured again during and at the end of the unit ). ! Find out about sports activities available in our community. WEEK 4 Developing our social and emotional health ! Describe our families and why they are important to us. List each member and how they help us. ! Discuss our friends and peers and how they are influence and support us. 2! Discuss where we go and what we do with our friends. List ! Have students create friendship circles with close friends in the middle, good friends next and acquaintances still further out. ! How can we be good friends?

5 Discuss the qualities needed. ! How can we meet new friends? Create a list of student suggestions and add to this throughout the unit . ! Students explain their hobbies to a small group. List these. Brainstorm other hobbies/leisure activities. ! Investigate leisure activities available in the community. Map and produce a guide. ! Start watching Holly s Heroes. Episodes 1-4 What sort of person is Holly? What is her family like? How do they support her? What other types of families are there at Woolich? How were they similar/different? Lesson 1 Worksheet B WEEK 5 How can I resolve conflict effectively? ! What things make us feel good? What things make us feel bad? ! How do we feel when there is conflict between friends and peers and what are some ways we can resolve conflict when it occurs? ! Discuss assertiveness and bullying. ! What are some strategies and skills we can develop to deal with bullying and become more assertive?

6 ! Continue watching Holly s Heroes Episodes 5-8 What is bullying? Was Holly bullied? How? How did Holly react to the bullying? How did she overcome obstacles in her way? Give egs WEEK 6 What is stress and can it be good? ! Brainstorm situations when we have felt unhappy or under pressure. ! With a partner, students group these and discuss how they would react in the same situation. ! List indicators of stress such as red face, nausea, shouting, short temper, crying etc ! Share stressful situations and discuss some solutions to them. ! Create a list of strategies students use to lessen their stress. ! Pose the question is all stress bad? ! Continue watching Holly s Heroes Episodes 9-10 What are the stresses in Holly s life? Work with a partner to brainstorm. What did Holly do to deal with and handle the stress? Continue watching Holly s Heroes Episodes 11-13 What were Holly s goals? How did she achieve them? With a partner list the important messages you got from watching Holly s Heroes. Share and discuss. WEEK 9 How am I changing? What is my changing role in the community? Year 6 students discuss change associated with puberty. Year 5 students choose a year 6 student to interview about their time at RWPS.

8 They then write an article about their contributions to the school community. Year 6 students write their graduating statement. How Richmond West has contributed to their development. WEEK 10 ! Students present fitness plans to the group. !
