SCOPE a) This specification applies to products that are water based and designed for use on building interiors. b) The APAS is a product certification scheme made available to financial Members of APAS.

BACKGROUND a) APAS Document D001 should be read to obtain a broad overview of the Australian PAINT Approval Scheme (APAS). b) Manufacturers who wish to participate in APAS within Australia should consult APAS documents D177. c) APAS approval to this specification may be gained by compliance with the requirements detailed in this specification and those in document D192.

DESCRIPTION & GUIDE FOR USERS General product description a) Products approved under this specification are finishing paints for the INTERIOR of BUILDINGS that can be applied with or without thinning with water. They are typically available from stock in a manufacturer's colour range (MCR) as illustrated on a colour card with colours of lesser opacity identified.

4 B) Products approved under this specification are designed for application by brush, roller or spray to primed or sealed surfaces in accordance with manufacturer's directions, typically to a dry film thickness of 25 - 40 m per coat. Handling time typically within 6 hours. Technical basis of specification a) This specification is based on respective parts of Australian Standard AS 3730 as indicated below; Sub-classes a) This specification is divided into the following sub-classes; 0260/1 - gloss finish 0260/2 - semi-gloss finish 0260/3 - low gloss finish 0260/4 - washable flat finish 0260/5 - flat finish for ceilings b) Standard equivalence is as follows.

7 COMPOSITIONAL REQUIREMENTS Binder a) Although the type of binder is not restricted by this specification, binder types with a history of satisfactory performance include emulsion acrylics either full or partial acrylics eg styrenated acrylics. Of primary importance is the compliance with the properties listed in Table 1 below. b) Other binder types may be considered depending on their compliance with the requirements established below. Pigmentation a) Pigmentation shall be non-toxic and inert and comply with the requirements of the Uniform PAINT Standard.

8 B) Of primary importance is that the choice of pigmentation shall result in compliance with the technical requirements detailed in Table 1 below. Volatiles a) The volatile portion shall principally be comprised of water. b) For VOC content restrictions refer Table 1 below and APAS Document D181. Colour a) Products approved under this specification are normally available in a wide range of colours the manufacturer s colour range or MCR refer the manufacturer s data sheet for details. 7. PRODUCT APPROVAL REQUIREMENTS General a) The product and its application shall comply with all requirements of APAS Document D192 during the application process and the life of the approval.

9 Technical a) The product shall comply with all requirements detailed in Table 1 below. Safety & environmental a) The product shall comply with all requirements of clause & of APAS Document D192. b) The manufacturer s material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) must be studied closely prior to using the product and complied with during use of the product. APPENDIX A POLISHING TEST A1. Scope a) This method is intended to simulate cleaning of wall surfaces and to exclude products which "polish" readily with the resultant shiny and patchy appearance of a wall surface viewed at low angle under low angle incident lighting conditions.

Equipment a) A cork sanding pad of the same general dimensions as detailed in AS/NZS (Resistance to washing) b) Medical gauze (Handy elastic gauze from Beiersdorf Aust Ltd is suitable). c) Gardner scrub machine (or equivalent). d) Tap water e) Leneta test panels approx 150 x 300mm. A3. Procedure a) This test largely follows the method detailed in AS/NZS (Resistance to washing) with changes to the procedure as detailed below. b) Prepare test panel by drawing down the test PAINT on the Leneta chart using a #32 wire wound bar.
