2 This book helps streamline access to relevant information in the CODES that apply to commercial construction. It is not intended to replace those CODES ; its purpose is to help you quickly find the information you need from them. The CODES listed in Table 1 (T1) contain thousands of pages of information that cannot be condensed into something as small as this book. We have excluded items such as water & gas supply tables that are covered in other books in the code Check series so that we might include items for which code digests are not so readily available, such as suspended ceilings, commercial kitchen hoods, and commercial wiring. Table 1 (T1) lists the primary CODES used in this book. To determine the CODES applicable in your area, contact the local building department. In most cases, CODES do not go into effect until one or more years after the publication date and then stay in effect for approximately three years. In other words, most jurisdictions would begin enforcing a 2009 code in 2010 or 2011 and continue using that code through 2012 or 2013 or even past that date.

3 This book does not include energy CODES , which vary greatly from state to state, or CODES for green building, which have been adopted in some areas. Contact the local building department in the planning stages to determine how these CODES might affect your project. Special thanks to Thomas Trainor, General Contractor, and Jeff Hutcher, City of Oakland, for their assistance. For more information, any updates, and why Benjamin Franklin is featured in the code Check series, visit: KEY & EXAMPLES . Each item with a checkbox refers to a code rule and is followed by a code citation in brackets TABLE 1 MODEL CODES REFERENCED IN THIS BOOK [ ]. The subheading in bold print above the list of citations indicates which code from T1 is used for that group of references. Subject Model code Abbreviation Organization example , from page 7: Building 2009 International Building code 09 IBC ICC Fire Doors 09 IBC. Fire 2009 International Fire code 09 IFC ICC n Door req's permanent labeling including manu & ratings_____ [ ].

4 The 2009 International Building code section requires fire doors to have permanent labels that include the manufacturer and the fire ratings. 2009 International Plumbing code 09 IPC ICC. Plumbing In the plumbing and mechanical sections, there are often two citations. The first one, in 2009 Uniform Plumbing code 09 UPC IAPMO brackets, is the citation from one of the International CODES , and the second citation is from the Uniform CODES (see table at left). 2009 International Mechanical code 09 IMC ICC. Mechanical &. example , from page 27: 2009 International Fuel Gas code 09 IFGC ICC Temperature & Pressure Relief Valves (TPRV) 09 IPC 09 UPC. 5 Electrical Lines that end with an EXC mean that code exceptions follow in the next lines. The lines 2009 Standard for Electrical Safety containing the exceptions start with a bullet rather than a checkbox. Masonry ACI 530 ACI. for Masonry Construction 2009 International Building code Section requires stairways to be 44 inches wide, and exception 1 in section allows 36 inch wide stairways when the occupant load is less than 50. TABLE 2 ORGANIZATIONS & ACRONYMS. Lines that are part of lists also begin with bullets rather than checkboxes. The table that gives the IAPMO International Association of Plumbing & Mechanical Officials size for grounding electrode conductors is table 34.

7 code citations that are changes from the previous code are highlighted in a different color, ICC International code Council and followed by an endnote.
