It applies to multi-family residential, offices, restaurants, tenant improvements, warehouses, small manufacturing facilities, stores, hotels, and other commercial buildings.

2 This book does not apply to one- and two-family dwellings and townhouses, which are covered in other books in the code Check series, nor does it apply to clinics or high-hazard occupancies (Group H) for manufacturing, processing, or storing combustible or hazardous materials. The citations inside this book would need to be greatly expanded to include these occupancies; they require a licensed design professional. This book helps streamline access to relevant information in the CODES that apply to commercial construction. It is not intended to replace those CODES ; its purpose is to help you quickly find the information you need from them.

3 The CODES listed in Table 1 (T1) contain thousands of pages of information that cannot be condensed into something as small as this book. We have excluded items such as water & gas supply tables that are covered in other books in the code Check series so that we might include items for which code digests are not so readily available, such as suspended ceilings, commercial kitchen hoods, and commercial wiring. Table 1 (T1) lists the primary CODES used in this book. To determine the CODES applicable in your area, contact the local building department.

4 In most cases, CODES do not go into effect until one or more years after the publication date and then stay in effect for approximately three years. In other words, most jurisdictions would begin enforcing a 2009 code in 2010 or 2011 and continue using that code through 2012 or 2013 or even past that date. This book does not include energy CODES , which vary greatly from state to state, or CODES for green building, which have been adopted in some areas. Contact the local building department in the planning stages to determine how these CODES might affect your project.
