4 (b) Students may meet the learning standards intechnology, either through a course in technologyeducation or through an integrated coursecombining technology with mathematics and/orscience. A commencement-level course intechnology education may be used as the thirdunit of credit in science or mathematics, but notboth.(c) The arts are defined as dance, music, theater, andvisual arts.(d) Students taking a sequence of not less than 5 unitsof credit in career and technical education (CTE) orthe arts may substitute another 3-unit or 5-unitsequence in place of the 3 units in a language otherthan English (LOTE).

5 (e) To earn the advanced designation, the studentmust complete one of the following:1. A language other than English (3 credits)2. CTE (5 credits)3. The arts (5 credits)( f ) For students entering grade 9 prior to the fall of2001, participation in physical education is requiredat the equivalent of 1/2 unit of study per with 9th graders entering in 2001, 2 units ofcredit in physical education are required forgraduation.(g) For students entering grade 9 prior to the fall of2001, diploma requirements include two 3-unit sequences, selected from mathematics, science, CTE,and the arts; or one 5-unit sequence in English orsocial studies.
