2 Available at the IVC bookstore. 6 scantrons form 882-E (green 4 x 11 ) and 1 scantron form 886-E or 888-E (green 8 x 11 ) All students will need to bring a printed copy of the Comun cate section of the Tu mundo textbook or bring your tablet or laptop to every class in order to access the e-book needed for class activities. GOALS The primary focus of this first semester of spanish is to develop your ability to understand native spoken and written spanish and to enable you to express yourself in basic situations.

3 Listening comprehension and reading are the bases for the acquisition of a new language. Remember that as children learning your first language, you had lots of time to listen before you attempted to speak. Don't be impatient with yourself when you find that you can understand far more than you can produce, that is natural; your speaking and writing abilities will always lag slightly behind your ability to understand. You cannot expect to acquire native-like competence in a foreign language in one to two years.

4 You can expect to be able to communicate with native speakers of spanish even though you make mistakes. The goal in this course is communicative competence not grammatical perfection. This class will use reading and writing activities to enhance your grasp of vocabulary and to provide you with opportunities to express yourself in spanish . Classroom time will be devoted almost solely to activities that will allow you to practice your skills of understanding and interacting in spanish .

5 Classroom time will NOT be spent doing grammar drills, translating, or listening to lengthy explanations of grammar. Students are expected to study and practice most grammatical concepts outside of class. If you feel that you need more detailed grammar explanations, we recommend that you sign up for spanish 180 and seek help at the Language Resource Center or see your instructor during office hours. OBJECTIVES At the end of this semester, you can reasonably expect to be able to understand and communicate on the following topics: Beginning Conversations: Names, Colors, Clothing, Numbers to 49, Description of people, Greetings Friends and Classmates: Age and birthdays (months and days of the week), Numbers 50-100, Classroom objects, Classroom commands, Parts of the body, Origin & nationalities.

6 Activities: Favorite activities, Telling time, Daily activities, Weather and seasons Family and Friends: Family relationships, Preferences and desires, Personal data, Language and nationality, Numbers 100-2,000+, Future plans Daily Routine and Holidays: Routine activities, Foods and mealtimes, Holidays and celebrations, States of being and emotions School and Work: Subjects studied, Classroom activities, Abilities, Careers and work activities, Activities in progress, Obligations 2 STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES (State mandated) Student will interpret native spoken spanish language based on topics listed in the Course Outline of Record (available at Click on Class Schedule, spanish , Details, Topics Covered).

7 Student will read and interpret material written in spanish of at least two paragraphs in length. Student will correctly identify course-pertinent vocabulary based on topics listed in Course Outline of Record. GRADES ARE NOT ROUNDED-UP ON THE FINAL GRADE IN THE COURSE. FINAL GRADE: The final grade can be accessed on your MySite one week after the final exam. ASSIGNMENTS (35% of grade) This is a COLLEGE -level transfer course, requiring COLLEGE level skills in reading, writing, listening, speaking and note taking.

8 This course is worth five (5) units and follows the Carnegie unit system: each hour in class = two hours of outside work. In order to succeed in this course, plan on studying between 8 and 12 hours a week outside of class. There are different kinds of assignments in this course. Please read carefully. You will complete work in these areas: Connect spanish : (See assignment handout or Connect spanish for details). These assignments are worth 25% of your grade. For each chapter, you will complete 100 points worth of assignments.

9 There may also be assignments in Connect spanish that are labeled Practice. Practice assignments do not count as part of your grade but will help you to acquire spanish and succeed in the class. Ensayos (Essays) These essays are worth 10% of your grade. There will be an assigned topic for Chapters 1-5 (see assignment handout). Students must turn in three (3) essays. All essays must be typed. Each graded essay is worth 10 points. Do NOT use a computer to translate your essay from English. Do NOT have a native speaker write or significantly edit your essay.

10 LATE ESSAYS ARE NOT ACCEPTED. A handout will be passed out the first day of class with all assignments, quizzes and final exam detailed. Always check your assignment handout; it is your responsibility to complete work on time. When you write essays, edit your work carefully before submitting. If you type your essay, make sure it s double spaced using Times New Roman, Calibri or Tahoma font 12 or larger. When your work is returned, examine all corrections carefully since they will help you to improve your written spanish .
