8 As. aresultofextensivesurvey andresearchcarriedoutby manyorganizations,namely,GeologicalSurve y ofIndia;IndustrialResearchBureau;Nationa lTestHouse;ConcreteandSoilResearchLabora tory,Chepauk,Madras;HirakudResearchStati on;HyderabadEngineeringResearchLaborator y;thelaboratoriesof theAssociatedCementCompaniesLtd; ,it was foundthatthewhitevarietyof sandavailableatEnnore,MadrasState,was .verypureinnatureandsuitablefor use as sandpassingS50-micron IS Sieveandr etainedon600 micronIS Sieve wasobservedto satisfytherequire-mentsofstandardsand as asubstitutefor ,theSectionalCommitteeformulatedIS 650 : 1955whichrecommendedEnnoresand passing S50-micron IS Sieve andnotmorethan10percentby masspassing600-micronIS Sieve. Thisgradingwasthesame asthatforLeighton-Buzzardsand:In the light ofexperiencegainedwith thepracticaluse ofIndianStandardsand(conformingtoIS 650~1955)fortestingthecompressiveandtens ilestrengthofIndiancementovertheperiod,c ertaindrawbacks"~ ,theCouncilofScientificandIndustrialRese archsponsoredtheschemeofinvestigationson 'MortarmakingpropertiesofEnnoresand'to becarriedoutattheConcreteandSoilResearch Laboratory,Madrasundertheguidanceoftheth enlSIwiththefollowingmainobjects:a) TodeterminetheoptimumgradingofEnnoresand which would givethehigheststrengthkeepingatthesameti me,theyield from thequarryas high aspossible.
