JOBDESCRIPTION#215 Community Outreach Worker School Administration Title Community Outreach Worker School Administration Scope of Responsibilities The Community Outreach Worker shall be responsible for developing a proactive approach to connecting families and Community groups in order to facilitate support and services to students. Working collaboratively with administrators and other staff, the Community Outreach Worker reports directly to a designated School Principal.

2 Competencies Required The Community Outreach Worker shall have the following competencies: (a) The ability to establish proactive relationships with families and Community agencies in order to support student success; (b) The ability to apply knowledge of early childhood development as it relates to academic and social success; (c) The ability to apply knowledge and experience working with and helping families in understanding their critical role in the development of their children; (d) The ability to formulate initiatives which support academic and social success for students; (e) Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills; (f) The ability to apply effective mediation and conflict resolution strategies; (g) The ability to problem solve within an established accountability framework; (h) The ability to work effectively in flexible work situations; (i) The ability to utilize current technologies such as word processing, e-mail and Internet; (j) The ability to work & communicate effectively within the Halifax Regional School Board, with students, parents, Community members and external groups such as government agencies; (k) The ability to apply knowledge, experience and commitment in the areas of race relations, cross cultural understanding, human rights and diversity; (l) The desire and ability to engage in continuing education and professional development; (m) The ability to maintain and promote confidentiality as the norm.

3 Revised June 22, 2012 2 JOB DESCRIPTION Revised June 22, 2012 Qualifications (a) Undergraduate degree in Social Sciences or relevant Diploma/Certificate from a recognized Community college ( Human Services, Early Childhood Education); (b) Minimum three (3) years successful experience working with at-risk students and their families; (c) Direct knowledge & experience of communities served considered an asset; (d) Valid Nova Scotia driver s license and reliable transportation. Specific Job Components A Community Outreach Worker in the Halifax Regional School Board shall perform tasks as are assigned by the designated Principal. These tasks may vary, from time to time, with the evolution of the organization and may include but not be limited to the following: (a) Establish positive relationships with students identified as at-risk; (b) Work with families and support them in understanding their critical role in the development of their children; (c) Establish proactive relationships with Community and governmental groups that would support students and their families as students complete their education; (d) Provide opportunities for the family and the school to meet and support their children; (e) Visit homes when required to provide the link between the school and the home to support student success; (f) Facilitate/mediate meetings between students, families, school staff and relevant Community partners.

4 (g) Develop effective communication links with students, schools and communities; (h) Work collaboratively with the principal and other staff to develop plans and initiatives to support at-risk students; (i) Other duties as assigned. Director, School Administration Date
