1 Job Safety Analysis DEFINITION: A job Safety Analysis is an evaluation of a specific job conducted in order to identify potential hazards involved with the role and document how the job can be performed safely. A job Safety Analysis should be a formally documented Analysis but can be an informal review of procedures after site conditions have been checked. All job Safety analyses should be documented to assist continuous improvement. How to conduct a Safety Analysis The person or team responsible for a job Safety Analysis should take the following approach: Step 1: Select the job to be assured (priority should be given to hazardous activities and new tasks Step 2: Break the job down into major steps or tasks (don t be too general when deciding on each step involved in the job) Step 3: Identify actual and possible hazards associated with each step of the job Step 4: Determine the safest possible way the job can be performed.)

2 TIP: Identification of job stages and potential hazards is easier if workers are observed doing the job and can contribute to the Analysis . Who should perform a job Safety Analysis ? The person in charge of completing a job Safety Analysis should be experienced at performing that type of work. The assessor will need to consult with workers who are familiar with the task and draw on observations, knowledge and experience to identify hazards effectively. Checklist: Questions to be answered during job Safety Analysis Could a body part or clothing get caught in moving parts of the machine?

3 Could debris fly out from the machinery? Could the worker trip or fall? Could the worker be struck by a falling object? Could the worker fall from a height? Is lighting adequate? Are there any live electrical hazards in the vicinity? Is there excessive noise or dust in the work area? Could the worker come into contact with chemical or biological hazards? Is ventilation adequate, particularly if the worker is in a confined or enclosed space? Are employees wearing suitable personal protective equipment for the work?

4 Could employees come into contact with moving vehicles? Does the job involve hazardous manual handling (such as lifting heavy boxes) Will interaction with surrounding activities create a hazard? What are the advantages of conducting a job Safety Analysis ? Job Safety analyses should regularly be carried out because they: Are regarded by the law as important aspect of complying with an employer s general duty to provide a safe workplace; Result in management having a better understanding of operational risks; Result in safer operating procedures, and a reduction in the risk of illness and injury in the workplace; Demonstrate your company s commitment to improving Safety in the workplace; Promote acceptance of safe work procedures.

5 Help to train employees in the steps required to perform their jobs safely; and Improve communication among workers and between supervisors and workers. How to conduct a job Safety Analysis review Is the job Safety Analysis on company letterhead? Is the job Safety Analysis signed by the work team supervisor or a more senior person? Does the job Safety Analysis identify clear job steps? Does the job Safety Analysis identify foreseeable hazards associated with the job steps? Have there been changes in the workplace which may have introduced new hazards or risks?

6 Have reasonable assessments of identified hazards been made? Have acceptable controls been identified for each hazard? Will the control measures be assessed after they have been implemented? Have named people been identified to implement the controls? Has the site of the works been inspected prior to start? Was the job Safety Analysis written in consultation with the work crew? Have those doing the job been informed of the detail of this job Safety Analysis ? Has the job Safety Analysis been signed by those doing the job?

7 Does the job Safety Analysis have a start and end date? IMPORTANT: You are responsible for the Safety of contractors and any risks present or created on site by contractors and their employees. Don t forget that active supervision and monitoring of contractors is essential. IMPORTANT: A Job Safety Analysis should be completed prior to commencing any new job, regardless of the size of the job. Alternatively, existing jobs can be assessed as art of an overall risk assessment or if there is reason to believe that Safety can be improved.

8 Priority should be given to jobs which have the highest risk and/or result in the highest rates of illness and injuries. Sample: Job Safety Analysis Safe operating procedure for changing a flat tyre Title of Operation: Changing wheel with flat tyre on a passenger vehicle Position/Title: Driver Department: Main roads Location: On road site Revision required: May 2012 Basic Steps Potential Hazards Procedures to be followed Key Precautions 1. Park vehicle & secure Vehicle could roll and cause damage or injury Pedestrians could be hit by passing vehicles while changing the wheel Park on a level surface, clear of traffic Apply the handbrake Turn on the hazard lights Put in transmission in reverse (if manual) or park (if automatic) Remove the key from the ignition Get all passengers out of the car Place Safety triangles or witches hats on the road (if available)

9 Chock the wheel that is diagonally opposite the flat tyre to prevent any movement while you change the tyre Refer to the vehicle manual for instructions Do not stand on the roadway 2. Remove the spare wheel and jack from their storage positions in the vehicle Over exertion Stand the spare tyre up and roll it out of the vehicle if possible Place the spare tyre under vehicle near the flat tyre Use correct manual handling technique 3. Loosen the wheel nuts Over exertion Hand injury if the wheel brace slips Vehicle could fall if the wheel nuts are removed Loosen, but do not remove the wheel nuts Turn the wheel brace anti clockwise Use correct manual handling technique Use only the correct size wheel brace or spanner Ensure the wheel brace nut is on the nut properly Wear gloves if possible 4.

10 Jack up the vehicle Vehicle could fall off jack and cause injury or damage Place the jack at the designated lifting point Raise the vehicle until the wheel is just off the ground Ensure the jack is on a firm surface Ensure the jack is not tilted, and the base is square on the ground Do not get beneath vehicle while it is up on the jack 5. Swap the wheels Over exertion Hand injury Remove the wheel nuts and place them together in a clean dry spot on the hub cap on the ground Remove the wheel and replace it with spare Place the flat tyre under the vehicle Replace wheel nuts and tighten by hand Lightly tighten the wheel nuts with the wheel brace in the designated sequence as per the vehicle manual Use correct manual handling technique Wear gloves if possible 6.
