Transcription of July 2015 - United Methodist Church
1 1 Hilton United Methodist Church july 2015 An Excerpt from The Grand Sweep by J. Ellsworth Kalas Week 12, Day 5 Judges 1, 2, 3 It is always difficult to live up to our occasions of high decision. Perhaps no book of the Bible makes that point more directly than Judges. The people worshiped the Lord as long as there were those who could recall the miracles of the days of Joshua (2:7), but then came another generation who did not know the Lord (2:10). The problem was no doubt accentuated by the weakness of the political structure under the judges. But all through this book the plot line is the same; 2:18-19 summarizes it perfectly.
2 When a judge, raised up by God, delivers the people from the hand of their enemies, the people serve the Lord usually as long as that judge lives. But as soon as the judge dies (and sometimes before) they would , following other gods (2:19). And despite all the warnings of Moses and Joshua, and all of the people s earnest vows of purity, they soon intermarried with the foreign peoples living among them and began to take on their pagan religious practices. So we begin a series of fascinating but essentially tragic stories. The lead characters change Othniel, Ehud, Shamgar but the plot remains the same.
3 The people forget God until they are in trouble; then they repent and God sends a deliverer; but as soon as their fortunes are secure, once again they forget God, and the whole dreary scenario repeats itself. Prayer: I d rather not have to repeat my poorest lessons, O Lord; help me, I pray, to learn well the first tie; in Jesus name. Amen. Join us on our Grand Sweep journey through the bible. This is a busy time for us all we still have those that count on coming to supper.
10 Just a short update on this month we feed anywhere from 30 to 50 people. This also includes those of the Church that are home bound, sick or whatever the case may be. Just because it is summer time doesn't mean people stop eating, they count on us and I count on volunteers to keep this ministry going. Again I thank those who help out each and every month, you are an awesome bunch of people and I appreciate all you do. If you would like to help or know more about this ministry please give me a call at 366-4091. God Bless, Linda Livermore News from Nurture: The Nurture Team has plans for the Summer.
