This course is designed to introduce you to some of the analytical methods for the study of the physiological and biochemical responses to Exercise . Tentative Course Outline We will meet as a group on Mondays for the main purpose of introducing the lab experiment that you will conduct during an arranged day and time convenient for your lab group (some lab experiments will take multiple days to complete hence will span a couple of weeks). In addition to these scheduled times, you may also arrange to use the lab during other times for purposes of gaining more practice with a method or to repeat an experiment that went haywire.

Evaluation Except when instructed otherwise, you will submit a printed and double spaced report following each lab Exercise . There are two main purposes of these reports: 1) to give you practice in writing in the style used in scientific papers ( , journal articles), and 2) to condition your brains to begin thinking in the science pattern (identify a problem and develop a rationale/hypothesis, consider the methods and Techniques that will allow logical and appropriate examination of the problem and hypothesis, formulate a plan of analysis, present your results, and interpret your results in the context of the hypotheses and in comparison with work from other researchers).

7 This report should take the form of a journal article containing the following items: 1. Introduction: Background information including rationale for the study and pertinent previously published Research on this topic. Not expected to be an exhaustive review of literature, but some literature usually needs to be cited. Most of the time, using about 2-4 literature citations is sufficient. 2. Methods: Describe what equipment was used and precisely how they were used. Also any other procedures such as how the subjects were treated, etc. Do not list - Everything belongs in narrative format (paragraphs; not bullet points). 3. Results: Present all the raw data (or means where appropriate) in either tabular or graphic form, as well as a description of the results in narrative form.

8 Tables and/or figures are generally necessary. No speculation or interpretation of the data is allowed in this section. 4. Discussion: In this section you explain what your results mean and how they compare with prior literature. You may also speculate, apply results to applied problems, make conclusions, excuses, etc. This section requires more finesse than the others because you should not leap to excessive conclusions, yet not be too timid about making recommendations based on your findings. 5. References: Provide a numbered and alphabetical listing of all references cited in the report. Do not include references that were not cited and please do not cite course notes or textbooks. The only acceptable reference is a primary reference: a paper published in a scientific journal such as Journal of Applied physiology , Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise , International Journal of Sports Medicine, etc.

9 Each full lab report will be worth 50 points (10 pts ea section) and will be scored according to how well the above criteria are met. Lab reports are to represent that student s original work. Borrowing and sharing paragraphs, figures, tables, and other content is not acceptable and will be treated as academic dishonesty (see attached Academic Dishonesty Policy). Lab exercises that indicate Datasheet Only are worth 25 points. Generally, lab reports will be due one week following the final data collection period and should be submitted as a Word file or pdf (as email attachment). Late reports will be reduced by 10% for each day late. Participation and initiative will be subjectively evaluated and I will use this evaluation as a way of deciding a final grade when a student s point total is on the borderline between grades.
